| CATW-LAC works at the local, regional, national and international levels to promote women's human rights, including the right to live free of violence and sexual exploitation. DFW's $50,000 grant will fund the Red Alert System – an innovative system that consolidates the search for victims of contemporary forms of slavery, especially trafficking victims and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation. The Red Alert System also involves a comprehensive victim protection program that includes legal advice and representation during the search process and post-rescue; medical and psychological counseling for families and victims; and education, vocational training, and emergency shelters.

| The Proven Platter – McElroy Family Favorites |

I didn't have to think too hard this month to decide which recipes that I wanted to share with you. Although I owned an Italian restaurant in Seattle for 25 years, my entire kitchen staff is from the state of Michoacán, Mexico, and the food of their country is the one that we have made over and over again for restaurant family meals and celebrations. As you may have guessed from the photo accompanying this post, what you are looking at is our end-of-the-shift family meal. These tried-and-true dishes are at the heart and soul of my repertoire. I hereby bring you "McElroy Family Favorites!"

Returned Peace Corps Speakers — As part of our partnership with the Peace Corps Let Girls Learn initiative, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) are available to speak at your chapter meetings to share their Peace Corps experience and bring firsthand knowledge and perspectives of cultures worldwide. If you would like to schedule an RPCV speaker, please complete the online Registration Form. The form is currently geared to teachers but can be adapted as follows:

Teacher = Your Name
School = Organization (DFW)
Grade Level = Adult
Number of Students = Number of Participants

Once the form is completed, Peace Corps staff will send the request to RPCVs in the geographic area (based on ZIP code). You will receive a list of potential speakers, and can then reach out to the most appropriate RPCV.
Be sure to include if you would like to learn more about a specific country or type of project. For example, you may want to have a speaker from the country that DFW is featuring that month.

Chapter Leader Tips & Reminders |
|
Timing of Educational Materials — Did you know that we have amazing volunteers who help prepare our educational materials every month? They work very hard to make these materials available for your chapter meetings. Educational materials (including the Grantee Fact Sheet; Recipes, Customs & Cuisine; and the PowerPoint presentation) are available on our website by the 15th day of the month prior to when the grantee is featured. For example, the educational materials for our July featured grantee will be online by June 15th. Prior to the 15th, basic information on the project we are funding is available on our website under "Learn".
Member Profile Survey Launches — As we move towards our 2020 Vision, we are eager to have more members involved at every level of DFW. That is why we are launching our perpetual Member Profile Survey and are asking members to tell us more about their skills, backgrounds, and areas in which they would like to volunteer. We will use this database to match members with DFW's volunteer needs, such as committee work, board member searches, special projects, or consulting opportunities. This information will be held in a secure database and will only be used for DFW purposes. Please encourage your chapter members to participate in this survey. There will be a link in each issue of The Dish, starting with the June issue.

| The CA, Santa Barbara-2 chapter welcomed a special guest speaker at its April meeting: Yangchen "YC" Lama (center), a board member with Hands in Outreach, our featured grantee that month. YC was a beneficiary of Hands in Outreach when she was a young girl. She shared her story, provided an in-depth narrative of Hands in Outreach and even celebrated her 40th birthday with the chapter! |
Chapter Meeting Guidelines — DFW chapter meetings are as unique and varied as our chapters themselves! Many chapters enjoy having speakers or other activities at their meetings, which is a great way to keep your meetings interesting and your members engaged. We do ask Chapter Leaders to follow some guidelines regarding chapter meeting activities, and these guidelines have recently been updated. The purpose of these guidelines is to protect the intent and integrity of DFW meetings, and to help you, our Chapter Leaders, address any questions or requests from your members.

FYI, on a quarterly basis, DFW's home office puts together a speaker list, with representatives from our featured grantees who may be available to visit or Skype into your meeting. If you are not receiving this list, please contact your Regional Leader.

| Sharing Best Practices |

The CA, San Jose-2 (Ferguson) chapter celebrated our 7th anniversary on April 25th. We estimate that we have donated approximately $50,750 to DFW in the past 6 years, which includes our continuing sponsorship of a student at Shining Hope for Communities, and our two craft fairs that benefit the 13th Month annual appeal.
Every year I have made a small gift for all the members to thank them for their continued participation in our chapter. This year I wood-burned some wooden spoons for everyone to use while preparing another seven years of potluck dishes. Our tradition also includes a big cake. This year I made a giant, three-tiered cake, like a wedding cake. One tier was decorated with an African theme, one with an Indian theme, and one with a Latin American theme. I also set up a photo booth, which provided some great photos!
One interesting thing about our chapter is that I have been the only Chapter Leader, we have had only one Treasurer for the six years, only one Secretary, and only one Membership Chairperson! We also have a wonderful member who writes a fabulous "let's get excited" preview email before our meeting, and another member who has sent out every Evite for six years. When I started the chapter, I told these women that if they volunteer for a job, it would probably be for life, and so far, it has been!
One other interesting thing, after our first year we decided we had too much food, so we have a Potluck Team A and a Potluck Team B so our members only have to bring a potluck dish every other month. Every member has a partner, so if a member can't make a meeting when it's her turn to cook, she calls her partner and makes arrangements to exchange cooking dates. It works out very well, although we still have too much food!
