Protecting Queensland's national parks
Recently, NPAQ was extremely pleased to congratulate the Palaszczuk government on their commitment in delivering an election promise – that of reinstating nature conservation as the primary goal of national park management.
Acknowledging the very positive direction that the recent amendments take, NPAQ urges that the dust is not allowed to settle on the reform process. Two areas in particular - special management areas and provisions for ecotourism facilities - remain of concern. Read more
Why national parks should be valued – as told through the lens of children Researchers have been examining the different ways that contact with nature can contribute to the health and well-being of children. The role that nature plays in children acquiring an appreciation of the environment has been highlighted, and how it leads to developing the ability to feel and express concern for other species. Coal dust can kill coral, reduce growth of fish and seagrass
Researchers at the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville have found that corals exposed to the highest concentrations of coal dust die within two weeks. The scientific study mimicked the exposure of marine species to coal dust by adding carefully controlled amounts of fine coal particles and measuring the responses over time. Read more

The Parliamentary Committee overseeing the Inquiry into the Vegetation Management Bill has commenced publishing submissions. Read more
World Migratory Bird Day
For the second year running, World Migratory Bird Day coincided with the Australian Government adding more migratory shorebirds to the official threatened species list. This listing is a solemn reminder that despite our collective efforts, there is still much work to be done. Read more
NPAQ sadly farewells Anna Tran, our Business Development Officer. Anna has been with NPAQ for over five years, starting out as the Membership Officer.
Anna’s love for national parks has been translated into NPAQ’s successful education, communication and engagement programs. Anna was part of the team that introduced our fortnightly ebulletins Neck of the Woods and bi-monthly magazine Protected, engaged members through the Friends of Park program, and encouraged people to go bush through NPAQ’s Great Queensland Bushwalk.
We wish Anna all the best for her future endeavours, and express our thanks for her passion for national parks and dedication to NPAQ.
