May 2016

As I reflect on the previous year in my role as Commodore and involvement on the CoM since 2012 it easy to forget how much has been achieved, and how much more work we have to do - especially around facility renewal, maintenance and club operations.

This past sailing season has been both successful, challenging and run unusually late into the year due to international sailing events and public holidays. While the moving of the ISAF Sailing World Cup to the St Kilda area was disruptive to several clubs race programs in December, our involvement in this event strengthened our existing ties and further developed our race management skills. I’m confident that WSC could host large scale events if we wanted to.

Our retention of new and existing sailing members continues to be our challenge. Both our adult learn to sail and TACKERS programs continue to be the main pathway for membership and sailing participation. Membership growth will only come from increasing the frequency of these activities and/or by members recruiting members. Our challenge with the training program is delivering a sustainable program for our instructors. So if you're keen to become a dinghy instructor or assistant instructor - Alan, Doug and Gary will certainly welcome any additional support.

This year the CoM has taken on board the recommendations from our annual independent audit of the Club’s accounts and reviewed its profitability with a view to ensuring the club is in a strong financial position. I have little doubt that over the short term his trend will continue until the club is able to consistently grow its membership base.

Presentation night - Sat28 May

Presentation night is closing in pretty quickly so make sure you circle the date in your diaries – Saturday 28 May. Awards, food, celebrations, and reflections on the season’s races, that amazing lift and how much better we are at sailing than a year ago. Thinking of selling your boat and upgrading to a new one? A change of class? Lots to talk about.
Time: Doors open 6pm, dinner at 7pm
Tickets: members & guests - adults $20, family $50 More details on the website.

First Friday of the month - 3 June

Come and join in the last Friday Night of food, music and bar open before we take a break for the colder winter months. We will be serving a variety of Mexican food and will make sure we get some music happening for the evening. The weather will be getting colder, so we will have the heaters on and the room warmed up. We will aim to organise some board games to provide some entertainment.

Save the date - Sat 20 August

Progressive Dinner - All Williamstown Sailing and Boating Clubs Saturday 20 August
We have been invited to be involved in a progressive dinner involving Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, the Royal Motor Yacht Squadron and WSC. Initial plans are drinks and appetisers at WSC, entrees at Hobsons Bay, main course at Motor Squadron and desserts and dancing at Royals. Each club will be allocated about 40 tickets for their members, prices are not set as yet. We will keep you informed when arrangements are finalised. It should be a great night and a wonderful opportunity to mingle with the other clubs.

Event wrap up - Friday night 6 May

About 50 members and friends made the most of the lovely mild weather at the club on Friday night on 6 May. There were quite a few kids having great fun challenging each other on the foozball, table tennis and quoits. It has been great to see so many families coming to the club over the last few months and making the most of the location and activities available. The lasagne, garlic bread and pot of spaghetti bolognaise sold out to satisfied customers. Thanks to those who helped out during the night with cooking, serving and cleaning up. Local group Folkus provided some toe tapping background music and kept those sitting inside well entertained.

Working bees

Winter working bees

Working bees start on Saturday 4 June and I hope you’re all getting excited! Working bees are a fantastic way to give back to the club whilst enjoying the camaraderie of your fellow members, making new friends and showing off your skills!

The success of our working bee program relies on many members putting in some effort during the winter months. Whatever your skills and experience, or lack of, please make sure you come to the club and give a hand in some way at a few of the working bees. Many hands make light work.

There will be plenty of projects both inside and outside the clubhouse so irrespective of the weather there will be lots to do. This winter’s efforts will include adding bumpers to the floating pontoons, annual mooring maintenance and decking repairs. Sprucing up the Clubhouse with some new timber and lots of painting is high on this year’s to-do list. If you can’t make it on Saturdays, but are available at times during the week, let me on 0412 241 980 and I’ll find some jobs to suit!

survey

Social survey

The social committee is conducting a short anonymous survey to understand what social activities members are interested in.  Your contribution is important to assist us with planning. The survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete. Thanks to those who have already completed the survey. Please complete the survey by Sunday 29 May. Survey link.

AGM and Committee of Management nominations

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 31 July. This year a number of positions will need to be filled, the role of Treasurer and Secretary are two key roles that will need to be filled. Anyone with a special interest in these positions is always welcome to nominate, if you're unsure of the role or tasks and keen to help out please contact the Commodore.

The nomination process for any Committee of Management (CoM) position requires submission of a nomination form, which is available in person on Saturdays and is available on the website.

Whist the AGM is held on 31 July, nominations close on noon Saturday 25 June to allow time to run any elections if required. Elections are only necessary if we receive more nominations than vacancies for any Committee member positions.

Social sail video - 23 April

A nice lazy sail over to St.Kilda Marina and back. Wind was a steady southerly 10~15 knots, waves around 1 metre. The small fleet departed just after 1pm, heading east taking Channel Marker no. 20 to Starboard, then bearing off north-east to the Kerford Road Jetty, then turned southeast to the yellow fixed mark near St Kilda Marina, then back west past channel marker 17a, turned north to fixed buoy R4 then turned for home, for a round trip of two hours. Watch the video.

Pearls of wisdom

Some wise words from the crew of the James Pearl:
Pearl 1 - Remember to have fun and enjoy
Pearl 2 - Always do a dry run of the spinnaker at the jetty so you can check there are no tangles and all is attached correctly
Pearl 3 - Don't fall on the skipper as they steer the boat, especially if you are crossing the shipping channel (big mistake)
Pearl 4 - When moving from starboard to port side when tacking be sure to leap like a tiger (possible consequence of not doing this is capsize)
Pearl 5 - Be aware that if you do fall on the skipper, remember the skipper steers the boat and can ensure waves break on you
Pearl 6 - When positioning yourself at the front of the boat, you not only assist with the spinnaker,  you are also the wave breaker
Pearl 7 - Be sure to have long range super powered water guns ready for social sailing days (pay back time)
Pearl 8 - Secure your specs and hat as losing them can be costly exercise
Pearl 9 - Listen to the skipper, the boat has no place for stubborn crew
Pearl 10 - When there is no PORT LEFT you drink red (this saying helps to remember Port is the left side of the boat
Pearl 11 - We use the spinnaker on the windward return. It just doesn't work any other way, we have tried it
Pearl 12 - No wind makes for a slow sail  and boat karaoke is an option
