 Land of Oak & Iron - Spring 2016

Welcome to the first Land of Oak & Iron Landscape Partnership newsletter!

We've had a busy start to the project. Please take a moment to have a read through some of what we have already achieved, as well as our plans going forward.

SAVE THE DATE
We've got lots going on in the Land of Oak & Iron this summer.
 

Saturday 11th June - Heritage Centre consultation event: 10.30 am - 12.30 pm at Winlaton Mill Village Hall, May Avenue, Winlaton Mill, NE21 6SF
The winning design and draft proposals will be on display; refreshments available!

Sunday 10th July - Land of Oak & Iron launch:
1 - 4 pm at Blaydon Youth and Community Centre and Shibdon Pond
Shibdon Road, Blaydon, NE21 5LU
A free event with plenty to do for the whole family including live music, information about the projects and opportunities to get involved, heritage arts and crafts, taster sessions, wildlife exploration for young and old and much, much more!
Crowleys Dam

Driven by the enthusiasm of the Sunniside History Society initial clearance works have taken place at Crowleys Dam in the Derwenthaugh Country Park with support of students from Whickham Comprehensive Secondary School.

Whinfield Coke Ovens

In January, Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust (TWBPT) secured £15,000 match funding from Historic England to enable scrub clearance work to be undertaken at Whinfield Coke Ovens.

This will allow for building restoration work in the coming months. TWBPT are also working with Groundwork's Youth Team and Gateshead College on engaging young people in the restoration of the Coke Ovens and surrounding area.

Shibdon Meadow

The purchase of Shibdon Meadow has recently been completed by Durham Wildlife Trust as part of the Land of Oak & Iron. Work will be starting soon on the restoration of this wetland and grassland site.

Our Bright Futures

We are looking for practical volunteering opportunities that could connect young people with the landscape of the Land of Oak & Iron. Please get in touch if you have something to offer.

Our Bright Futures aims to tackle three big challenges facing society today - a lack of social cohesion, a lack of opportunities for young people and vulnerability to climate change. 
Community archaeology

We are currently tendering for a contractor to deliver this scheme.

Get involved with the Land of Oak & Iron

There are lots of ways to get involved. From joining an archaeology dig, or supporting at various events across the area, we've got something for everyone.

Whatever your interests, please get in touch.
The Land of Oak & Iron will also be at these events:

Friday 24th June - Volunteer event: Trinity Square, Gateshead
Come along and find out about volunteering opportunities with the Land of Oak & Iron.

Saturday 2nd July - Pont Valley Network 's community day: 10 am - 4 pm at Dipton Community Centre
We'll be there with information about how you can get involved in the Land of Oak & Iron.

Sunday 17th July - Derwent Valley Partnership's party in the park: 12 noon - 6 pm at Blackhill & Consett Park, Laburnum Avenue, Blackhill, Consett, DH8 5TA
We'll be there with information about how you can get involved in the Land of Oak & Iron

Vacancies on The Land of Oak & Iron Landscape Partnership Executive Board - The Land of Oak & Iron Landscape Partnership is recruiting two new members to join the Executive Board, which is responsible for the strategic direction, governance and legacy of the Partnership.

Donation received from Gateshead Wildlife Group - Interim Partnership Manager Lisa Stephenson gave an informative talk to Gateshead Wildlife Group, about the Land of Oak & Iron programme and projects within it.
