From Big Ten meetings: The league's TV positioning was a major point of conversation with Commish Delany pointing to the market dictating where some of the conference's rights land. Northwestern AD Phillips: "No one has amnesia about the relationship we have had with ESPN. ... But we're at a different place, and I think they're at a different place in 2016 than we were in the last round (of negotiations). That doesn't mean we can't get to the altar together and get married again. But we're at the dating stage right now." (link); Michigan State AD Hollis on his new 15-year $150M+ multimedia rights deal with Fox: "The Fox deal for us was more about relationship. There was an upside, but we were generating a lot of those dollars already with what we were doing in-house. For us, it was partnering with a group that we felt like was getting into that segment that we already have some partnerships with BTN." Points to synergy with TV, movies & the fact that Auburn joined the Fox portfolio around the same time. (link); Delany also commented that he has no problem with Michigan FB HC Harbaugh's satellite FB camp push since it's well within the rules. Also, the league will not use a centralized replay operation for FB this year (link).
ESPN's Outside the Lines reported yesterday more sexual assault & domestic violence allegations at Baylor at the same time as the school's Board is reviewing a report on such issues by outside legal firm, Pepper Hamilton. The Waco Police Department was implicated in suppressing cases involving Bears FB student-athletes. In a handful of cases, BU did not investigate claims of sexual violence & a female connected to one situation says Pepper Hamilton did not reach out to interview her. Part of a statement from the university, "We are certain the actions that result from this deliberative process will yield improvements across a variety of areas that rebuild and reinforce confidence in our university." Lots more. - link
Your Big 12 expansion entries of the day: The Coloradoan obtained brochures sent by Colorado State Prez Frank to the Big 12's expansion committee last summer promoting the Rams institutional profile, fundraising success, growing alumni network & more. "Colorado State University is well-established as one of the nation’s top public research universities and has emerged nationally as an institution on the rise — both academically and athletically." More. (link); UCF AD White on developments: "I think its important that we focus on ourselves. We need to focus on what we can control: building our season ticket base, building our donor base and supporting our coaches and student-athletes." (link); Former Memphis MBB HC Pastner is no longer with the Tigers, but his culture of compliance could help UM's image as they push for Big 12 consideration (link); MySanAntonio's Griffin wonders if ESPN would pressure the Big 12 into adding UConn given the local ties (link).
Another 2014 990 hits the news & this one from the Pac-12 shows compensation for Commish Scott of over $4M for the calendar year. Overall league revenue stood at $439M for FY15, a 17% increase over FY14. Payouts per institution were $25.1M, up from $21.3M, though still behind the likes of peers in the SEC & Big Ten for the same time period. Pac-12 Networks went from $106.8M in income to $116.6M, with Prez Murphy-Stephans pulling in $1.25M. More data. - link
USF on the wire again, this time as AD Harlan readies to present a five-year strategic plan for the Bulls to the university's Board of Trustees working group. Full document is expected out today & looks to cover key topics of conference alignment, facilities & construction, as well as overall funding. Aspirational peers mentioned include Georgia Tech, Pitt, West Virginia & NC State. Some SWOT analysis to be part of the review. - link
Purdue AD Burke may be on his way out in West Lafayette, but he's still pushing for reforms to help student-athletes have a better experience. "Every sport's got some nuances. I really would like to see people look at it on an annual basis. ... Then break it down and say, 'What does that week look like in season and what does it look like out of season?'" Likes the new AD faces in the Big Ten, but wants them to understand the league's ethos. - link
Interestingly, Michigan-Dearborn (NAIA) Softball HC Combs, who is also an attorney, is representing some Missouri Softball student-athletes in their back & forth with the athletic department. Will not say who specifically engaged his services, but points to a letter sent to AD Rhoades earlier in the month that could have diffused the situation. Tigers volunteer AC Gillis has a brother on Combs' staff at Dearborn, which has included additional developments. Combs says he knows HC Earleywine, but has not had any contact with him during the process. More. - link
Updates from Delaware under new AD Rawak: The MBB HC search for the Blue Hens is already well under way with meetings reportedly held in Atlanta this week at the home of Parker Executive Search. UD WBB HC Martin is involved with interviews. The News Journal reports Villanova AC Dunleavy, Robert Morris HC Toole & Albany HC Brown are all in the mix (link); The News Journal's editorial board also writes on the situation Rawak is stepping into, "Elena Delle Donne and Joe Flacco aren’t walking through that door, folks...On one hand, there's a ton of work. On the other, there is great opportunity...UD’s athletics is at a pivotal point, and we feel that if Rawak is going to be successful, her first moves will have to be her, and the program’s, most important." (link)
U.S. Magistrate Judge Guyton ruled in favor of plaintiff attorneys yesterday in a case between a trio of former Tennessee athletics employees & the university. $462K is the fees settlement amount, which brings UT's total bill for the proceedings to $1.2M. University spokeswoman Nichols indicates the school is still reviewing its options on the next steps. - link
Witt/Kieffer's Santore with an entry for College Athletics & the Law, "Steer clear of common mistakes made by athletics administrators during the search process." Focuses on the importance of hiring a leader who can create and/or embrace a culture of compliance, the benefit of using a search firm who can thoroughly look into the backgrounds of HC candidates, as well as not leaking candidate names to the media. - link (scroll down)

Out with adidas, in with Nike for mega-Soccer club Chelsea as the new agreement will begin in 2017 & be worth $87M annually. Expected length is 10 years & is double what The Blues were receiving from Three Stripes. Second largest pact in all of soccer behind only Manchester United's deal with adidas ($109M/yr). New influx of cash somewhat makes up for a significant sum lost by not qualifying for the Champions League next year. - link

New Winthrop AD Halpin talks about his new opportunity that will focus on branding, getting to know every inch of the community early on, boosting attendance, the continued FB debate in Rock Hill & more. On potential cost of attendance for the Eagles: "I’m all for offering student-athletes everything we can to give them a great experience. The trick with that is every school has their own budget to balance. They’ve got facilities to maintain and some schools have great brands, sell a lot of tickets, take a lot of donations and they can supplement that budget. Some schools have to work hard to battle and overcome that." - link
Oakland AD Konya reviews how he plans to continue moving his department forward, points to the need for a new practice facility, enhanced student-athlete lounge & other infrastructure improvements. Working on financing & construction plans, "One thing people tend to do in athletics is to just focus on results. However, you can get to a good result through a bad process and you won’t be able to replicate those results over the long term." Impressed with the competitive success of his portfolio, says he sells "authentic experience" to prospective student-athletes. - link
Rutgers Senior Assoc. AD for Development Baumgartner profiled by NJ.com's Sargeant with AD Hobbs commenting, "I will tell you I don't think there's a better person in athletic fundraising today." Key donor Hendricks thinks Baumgartner is destined to be an AD. Baumgartner credits Iowa VP of Development Wax as critical to her development when they were both at Illinois, totally focused on continuing to raise the profile of RU through fundraising. Former boss & Missouri AD Alden also says it's only a matter time before Baumgartner assumes the AD chair. - link
Alabama FB HC Saban commented on how he handles discipline matters internally: "If we can change their behavior based on what we do, that would be the purpose of discipline. Discipline is not necessarily just punishment, which a lot of people view it that way. It's how do you change somebody's behavior so they have a better chance to be successful. That's the way we've always done it. That's the way we always try to do it. That's the way I like to do it with my own children. I think that's the way most parents like to do it with their own children." - link

This is just stupid cool as the Tampa Bay Lightning used the surface of its ice rink as a giant projection screen for a game of Mario Kart between periods of the Eastern Conference Finals this week. We've seen some schools, Kentucky comes to mind, use their playing surfaces in this way & it seems to be an execution that will continue to grow. No word on who won the Mario Kart match-up. - link

Despite Coastal Carolina's upcoming exit to the FBS, Big South Commish Kallander still confident in his league's position: "I guess the best way to put it is we're looking at some strategies to help strengthen our membership and expand our membership on the football side. I'm not going to say there's anything imminent that's going to happen, but in terms of growing the membership there's certainly a few things we're taking a look at to support that. We feel confident about the future of Big South football and feel like we are going to grow over the next few years." Wants to get league numbers up to eight or nine football programs and expects the cost of FBS participation to jump in the coming years. - link
Watch: LaSalle Dean of Students Moore took the opportunity to participate in the practices of each of the school's sports teams in an attempt to get to know the student-athletes on his campus. (link); Butler MBB HC Holtmann got a new deal through 2021-22, no financial details included (link); Oregon State WBB HC Rueck also inked an extension that could keep him in Corvallis through 21-22, no word on if his base will increase from $385K after 2016-17 (link).
