Being Disciples, Making Disciples in the Name of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World

From Our Pastor's Perspective:

On April 4, 1936, a meeting was held to formally organize Holston View UMC. The church had been meeting for since 1934 when a group that had come together at a revival had started having services and Sunday school under the shade trees in Mrs. Elsie Clonce’s  yard. The church grew and prospered and during the 1960s, built and had services in the old fellowship hall, built the parsonage and finally built the sanctuary. The church completed its daycare addition in 2006. Great things came from a small beginning. The thing is, not all small beginnings are all that small. When our God is involved, even the smallest things can be earth-changing. The people of Holston View have always had a way of hearing God’s voice, not just the preachers, but all the people heard and were obedient to his voice. This obedient faithfulness has been rewarded over and over by God. As we sit in the shadow of the 2016 General Conference there is great confusion and chaos over the future of our greater church. Many differ in opinion over what God is trying to say to us. Yet God hasn’t gone anywhere and is still speaking to us through scripture, experience, tradition and reason. The thing is that we, as United Methodist, hold scripture to be the primary form through which God speaks to us. Our experiences, tradition, and reason are secondary lenses through which we hear and interpret the scriptures. That being said, I believe that any movement of the Spirit of God finds validation in the scriptures, not in our experiences, traditions and or even reason. So when it comes to the current debates between delegates at conference there is no chaos or interpretation that overcomes the clarity of God’s word.

I don’t always understand why God’s word calls some things that seem victim-less, sin, but I do trust God’s word and know that his love is unending and true. If I believe this and believe that the word of God is divinely inspired, then I have to believe there is reason behind what God has spoken and man has written down. To me, that is faith. I do not condemn people for their behaviors. That is not my job. However, now at least some are railing at God’s word and us, the church as caretakers of his word, to try to get us to change it or our interpretation of it. God’s word is eternal and true. In all good consciousness,  I can neither leave God’s word nor the love of humanity that God professed. I am a man living in an imperfect world clinging to my faith in God’s love and truth. So I will speak God’s truth as best I can in love with patience. I will remember my own foibles, understanding that we all live in homes that are slowly being remodeled by God’s truth in love when we are willing to listen. Nothing is small and beyond hope if God is there. Thank You and God Bless.
