Your Money at Work

In 2013 we awarded a grant to Greenback Farms to empower small regional producers of organic seeds to increase and expand their work.  Sustainable Path's grant funded their purchase of a small-scale belt thresher that removes seeds from plants. The thresher is an expensive tool for many small-scale seed growers, who are the stewards of heirloom and developing varieties of plants important to our regional agriculture. This thresher is a main component of their “seed trailer”. The mobile unit also includes an air-screen seed cleaning machine (used to clean seeds after they have past through the thresher).

Over the past two years, the equipment has been demonstrated to over 100 farmers at three regional workshops and to over 800 seed stakeholders at a national seed conference.
Strong interest was generated and 12 local seed producers rented the equipment, with more demand expected this year. Greenbank Farms is currently discussing expanding their outreach with the Organic Seed Alliance.
Sustainable Path's Board of Directors has promoted Lee Benner to the position of Foundation Director. Since November 2012 Lee served ably as the Foundation's Director of Operations. The Board is excited to have Lee in this new role.
