Experiments in Color
River Tide, oil on board, 24x30"
I made it through the West Austin Studio Tour again -- hooray! Though most people I meet socially don't realize it, I'm an introvert. By the end of two successive weekends of being 'on,' I'm exhausted and looking forward to solitary days in my studio.

It was, however, great to meet so many art lovers and get the chance to talk about my process and paintings. I find that I discover new aspects of my paintings by answering questions about the work.
As I talked about the differences between my tree landscapes and my newer work, I realized that I've been reluctant to use as much color in my oil paintings (as you can see in the first landscape). After the tour, I decided to try an experiment to see if I could recapture the color. I'm quite happy with the result.

In addition to landscapes, I've been continuing to develop my portrait techniques. I'm trying to find the balance between subtle blending and dynamic brushwork. This example is an experiment in glazing (versus alla prima).

Painters Painting Painters Show

With the show less than four months away, I thought I'd share a few of the pieces that are being created.

First, here is my portrait of the painter Karen Offutt. I loved playing with the dramatic shadows and it was my first time using a circular panel.

An Artist's Eye, oil on board, 30" (round)
Next, here's the amazing piece that she did of me. I especially love that she captured the multicolored manicure (work of my 7-year-old daughter).

Lighthouse, oil on panel, 20x16"
I'll share more pieces in the newsletters leading up to the opening. In addition to Karen and me, the show will feature works by Jennifer Balkan, Chris Chappell, Felice House, Karen Maness, Revi Meicler, Mike Peterson, Johnnie Sielbeck, and Robert Summerlin. It's going be such a great show!

The Painters Painting Painters show will be at Davis Gallery September 24th - November 5th, 2016.
