THIMA President’s Message
Donna Coomes, MBA, RHIA, CHPS, CHDA, CCS, CHC, CPHQ
What a great time of the year! With high school and college graduations in abundance and the heightened anticipation for summer vacations, I continually encounter folks in great spirits. As I am writing this message to my THIMA friends and colleagues I am thousands of miles above land on a plane, with my husband, as we make our way to South Dakota for a week of vacation. It’s our first time visiting South Dakota and we are looking forward to visiting Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, Crazy Horse, and of course Sturgis!
Before heading out for vacation I had two major objectives to accomplish. First, was sitting for the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) exam, which I am thrilled to say I was successful in completing thanks to the excellent CHDA workshop that AHIMA offers. The second thing I needed to do before leaving for vacation was to attend the THIMA Strategic Planning (SP) meeting. The THIMA current and incoming board spent two days in Chattanooga in the SP meeting. While participating in the SP meeting I was reminded of how truly fortunate our association is to have so many passionate and forwarding thinking volunteers.
Four of our Corporate Sponsor vendors, DocuVoice, Dolbey Systems, Healthcare Resource Group, and Peak Health Solutions were in attendance at the strategic planning meeting. We are very grateful for our Corporate Sponsors’ support and commitment to our association. Other guests included AHIMA Speaker of the House, Elizabeth Delahoussaye, who provided an AHIMA Strategic Initiative update. Andrea Koppelmann, CEO of Knowledge Connex, LLC was also in attendance, and she shared with the board some new features/functionality, including a dashboard for the state and local THIMA boards, that will be available on the THIMA website. It was a treat to have AHIMA Board Member Ginna Evans with us as well to participate in the discussion and bringing her insight as an accomplished HIM professional.
The strategic goals identified during the SP meeting will be incorporated into the THIMA strategic plan for 2016-2017. One of the heavily discussed topics at the meeting was around the ever changing HIM role and environment and the need for the association to ensure that avenues for participation are afforded to our THIMA members both by way of virtual and face-to-face meetings.
A few weeks ago, I, like many other AHIMA members, received a survey from AHIMA asking my input on whether or not our profession is in need of a doctoral degree. When I first entered the health information management field you had two options, pursue an Associate degree or a Bachelors’ degree. Of course for many years the Masters’ degree in HIM was introduced and so perhaps it is time for us to have a doctoral degree in health information management as well.
Have you heard that the Joint Commission (TJC) has rescinded the 5 year ban on texting orders? TJC has provided some guidance on an appropriate process texting patient orders they have also stated that further guidance will be released by June. Challenge will most likely be for healthcare organizations to successfully operationalize a compliant workflow process.
Have a safe, happy, and fun-filled Memorial Holiday this month!

Reducing Medical Errors with Improved Communication, EHR Use
Excellent article reported in EHR Intelligence
The revelation that medical error is the third leading cause of death in the United States sent unsettling reverberations through the healthcare industry last week, but the news is likely only the tip of the iceberg and much more must be done to address this growing health issue.
