CBH Annual Meeting and Budget Review Opportunity
 
Make plans to be a part of CBH's leadership and fiscal future by attending and participating in the Annual Meeting, Sunday, June 5, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.  Board members will be elected by the community, and the budget for the 2016-2017 year (beginning July 1) will be approved.  This also is a key time for you to meet and connect with the synagogue leadership and ask questions.  Proxy ballots and a proposed slate of new board members now are available; if you did not receive yours via U.S. Mail, please click the links to download.  

If you are interested in a more in-depth understanding of the budget prior to approval, Treasurer Andrew Newman will host an informational meeting open to ALL CBH partners, four days ahead of the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 1, 6:30 p.m., in the South Classroom.  This is your opportunity to ask financial questions without the time constraints of the Annual Meeting.

Todah Rabah to the Community Passover Seder Volunteers
 
On Sunday, April 24, 95 people from CBH and throughout the Yolo County Jewish community took the annual journey from slavery to freedom, in a lively Seder led by Rabbi Seth Castleman.  Good food, beautiful flowers and lovely music made the event special.
 
The success of the Seder was due to our many volunteers.  Thank you to Rosanne Mandel and her assistant, Robin Neuman for the flower arrangements; Linda Hirsch for shopping; Michael Bobell for making the charosis; Diann Kramer for making the Passover salad dressing; the set-up and clean -up team of Connie Caldwell, Linda Hirsch, Marilyn Krausse, Allan Hollander, Pam and Marleny Driggers, Sally Eckert, Alan Brownstein and Gail Gutierrez; Sarah Pattison who led our talented singers Sharon McCorkell, Meredith Brownstein,  Meryl Rappaport, Diann Kramer, Meredith Brownstein, Linda Sternberg and Rosanne Mandel.  Also, thank you to the Jew Crew who helped the event to run efficiently.

Religious School, Young Families' and Youth News
 

Religious School THIS SUNDAY...

This Sunday will be the LAST DAY of Religious School and Keshet for the 2015-2016 year.  Please join our morning service at 9:30 a.m. to say good bye and express appreciation to our teachers, madrichim, song leaders and volunteers.  

In addition, lost and found items accumulated throughout the school year will be on display in front of the office on Sunday.  Please take a peek!  Unclaimed items will be donated to charity on Friday, June 3.

Religious School Last Sunday...

Israel commemorations and celebrations were the theme of the day. Some students took part in a program honoring fallen Israeli soldiers. Others learned Israeli folk dances from CBH Partner Bimla Schwarz. Everyone enjoyed some 68th birthday cake, marking Israeli's independence!  The cake was presented by Director of Education and Youth Malka Sansani and Student Rabbi Stacy Petersohn, who also ended her time at CBH last Sunday.  

Also, after lots of discussion and advocacy, the 7th grade class made final selections from amongst the non-profits vying for $5,000 in grant money from the B'nei Mitzvah gifts tzedakah fund to address hunger issues.  The recipients are:
  • Stop Hunger Now - $2,000
  • Foodbank Farmers - $1,000
  • Pets of the Homeless - $1,000
  • Yolo County Children's Alliance - $1,000
The curriculum is being reviewed and enhanced, in hopes that the program will continue with subsequent 7th grade classes at CBH.  Thanks to all who supported the class' efforts this year!

Shabbat Safari "Songs of Israel for Young Families"  
THIS SATURDAY, May 21, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

A Shabbat celebration for the young and young at heart, Shabbat Safari is designed for children under age six and their parents.

In honor of Israel Independence Day, this month we will sing and dance to the songs of Israel, and create Israel-themed artwork as part of our Shabbat observance.

Year-End BBQ Pool Party, THIS SUNDAY, May 22, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Celebrate friendship, Summer and the year ahead at President Ethan Liederman's home!  In addition to swimming and noshing, elections will be held for the 2016-2017 DRTY Board.  Previous DRTY involvement is not a requirement to run for a positon.

May Board Meeting Notes
 
At the Tuesday, May 10 meeting, the current board welcomed as visitors to the meeting the following 2016-2017 board nominees:  Bonnie Berman, Steve Cohan, Steve Cohen, Jodi Liederman and Sharon Richman.  To see a full list of the eight nominees on the slate, please click here.

The board took the following actions during the meeting:
  • Approved a request that CBH Partner David Aladjem serve as the student rabbi for High Holy Days services this Fall. David has completed approximately 2/3 of a remote-learning rabbinic program through Aleph, a Jewish Renewal program.  
  • Agreed to sponsor a Shabbaton with Rabbi Shefa Gold at CBH, Friday, September 23 – Sunday, September 25.  Congregations throughout the region also will be invited to sponsor the weekend of events, which will be open to all.  
  • Approved a resolution adopted by the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) that condemns the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Campaign against Israel.  Click here to read the resolution.
  • Approved a proposed budget for fiscal year 2016-2017, that will be presented to the membership for approval at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 5, 2:00 p.m., in the Sanctuary.  The board also is looking forward to seeing all CBH partners at the "Sweet Summer of ‘16" party on the same day, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
     
Additionally, a committee will be formed to work with Shalom Bayit, an organization, "fostering the social change and community response necessary to eradicate domestic violence in the Jewish community.”  The committee will develop policies and protocols regarding domestic violence in our community.

    "Israeli Baseball Trivia" was the theme of the CBH booth at the Jewish Heritage Festival, a Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region event, held at Raley Field in West Sacramento.

Israel Peace Alternatives Presents a Book Discussion:  "Power, Faith and Fantasy:  America in the Middle East, 1776 to Present," by Michael B. Oren

THIS SUNDAY, May 22, 2016
 
"Birth of a Nation" film screening with commentary by UC Davis Professor Emeritus Clarence E. Walker 
2:30 - 5:00 p.m., Social Hall
 
In a timely presentation via film and discussion, parallels will be observed and explored between the themes of post-Civil War reconstruction after the emancipation, with the building of a free, self-governing society after the liberation of the Hebrew slaves in ancient Egypt.
 
The second-half of the 1915 silent film epic "Birth of a Nation" will be shown, which revisits the reconstruction story. Immediately following, Professor Walker, a reconstructionist expert familiar with Jewish values, will guide attendees to compare and contrast the experiences depicted in the film with those detailed in the book of Leviticus.
 
"Birth of a Nation" was directed by D.W. Griffith and stars Lillian Gish.  Professor Walker was named the 2014 UC Davis Teacher of the Year, and studied for his Ph.D. in History under the mentorship of UC Berkeley Professor Leon Litwack, a noted expert on American race and anti-Semitism.

Heart and Spirit Chant Circle

CBH partners Hallie Morrow and Carrie Shepard will be sharing chants written by Rabbi Shefa Gold.  This month, the group will take a journey to revelation through the powerful media of chant and meditation.  These chants offer a unique way to access our spiritual selves through short texts from the Tanach, paired with powerful melodies.  Participants do not need a musical background, just an openness to experience the power of chant.  

The Heart and Spirit Chant Circle meets on the fourth Monday of each month.  For more information, contact Carrie or Hallie by clicking their names.

A Taste of Yiddish Study Group 
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., CBH Library
 
Do you have childhood memories of hearing Yiddish?  Are you curious about Yiddish in Jewish culture?  This group of approximately 10 welcomes new members, and functions in a "book group" format, sharing copies of stories, songs and jokes in Yiddish, that are then translated and discussed in English.  

It is ideal for participants to know the Hebrew alefbet before attending, however, help is available for those needing assistance.  This is NOT a drop-in group; regular attendance on the second and fourth weeks of the month is necessary in order to build skills from one meeting to the next.  Please contact Zipi Mor at 530-792-8917 if you plan to join the group, or if you need additional details.

CBH 7th Grader's Mitzvah Project Now Available on the Small Screen
 
Did you miss the "Hunger at Home" screening last Saturday morning at the Varsity Theater?  This film is intended to aid Marley in raising funds for Yolo County nonprofits addressing childhood hunger.  She is now half-way to her goal to collect $4,000.

Art Instruction for Continuation High School Students - Sally Besser's Bat Mitzvah Project

When Sally Besser becomes an adult Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, September 3, 2016, she will also begin a watercolor art and color theory volunteer teaching experience at Cache Creek High School in Yolo.  An educational option for Woodland Joint Unified School District students who may have been in the criminal justice system, parenting or pregnant, working long hours or facing other hardships, Sally's goal is to provide the Cache Creek population with the joy of a semester of art class.  Furthermore, through art, Sally's intent is to encourage the students to build self-esteem, provide a safe outlet for feelings, offer a sense of control and create a pathway to self-understanding.  

Your support can provide Sally's 50 students with quality art supplies to turn these goals into reality.  The estimated total amount required is $133 per student, or nearly $7,000 total, when combined with needed shared-use classroom items.

Join "Team CBH" and Plan to Kick Back on Sunday, August 7!
 
Were you an elementary school kickball king?  Have you been waiting for the right opportunity to get back on base?  It's time to step up to the plate and be a part of "Team CBH" for the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region Community Kickball Tournament.

The commitment is a fun and simple one:  you must be an adult or youth aged 13+, and you must be available to show up for the tournament at Sacramento's William Land Park on Sunday, August 7, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Depending upon team members' availability and interest, there may be a practice/social gathering or two ahead of the tournament, but these would not be mandatory.

All of the Sacramento-area synagogues, Shalom School and Hillel at Davis and Sacramento will be competing for what organizers hope will become an annual trophy and bragging rights.  Let's set the standard and bring the first championship home to Davis!

In a effort to serve and connect the more than 25,000 Jews of the eight-county Sacramento region, the Federation offers CBH partners an array of monthly programs for young families, senior citizens and the disabled, in particular.  To view a full schedule of activities, please click here. 

The following Davis-based program may be of particular interest:
 
Caregivers' Support Group at CBH:  spouses, family members and friends who are acting as caregivers for a loved one are invited to participate.  The group provides a warm environment offering support and strategies to address the unique needs and stresses of caregiving.  Facilitated by CBH Partner Jane Zeiger, LCSW.  The current morning session meets twice a month through early August, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.  An evening session may begin again this Fall.  Drop-ins are welcome at $10 per session with advance notice.  For more information, or to RSVP, contact Jewish Family Service Community Social Worker Alicia Mittleman at 916-205-0688.

Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento Presents:  
"Emperor Norton's Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine"

Take a trip back in time, and take peek into the amazing life of the late "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico."

 San Francisco tour guide, writer and historian Joseph Amster will appear in character and costume as "Emperor Norton," born Joshua Abraham Norton, a Jewish man who came to San Francisco in 1849.  After initial success as an investor, Norton went bankrupt, and reinvented himself in 1859 as "Emperor Norton."  As the Emperor, he ate complimentary restaurant meals, enjoyed gratis theater seats, rode public transit for free and even issued his own "Imperial Treasury Bonds" as legal tender.

  • News about partners' lifecycle events (b’nai mitzvahs, births, marriages, deaths) 
  • Items from Hillel, the Sacramento Jewish Federation and the URJ may also be included.  
All submissions must include contact information, and may be edited for length, clarity, readability and compliance with CBH editorial style.  The placement and frequency of submissions within the e-tone will be at the discretion of the Communications Specialist and/or the Executive Director.  No item will be included more than four weeks prior to an event/meeting date, although exceptions may be made for CBH fundraisers.
