Meet our 20th Mark Ashford Scholar
Congratulations to the 20th Mark Ashford Scholarship recipient Kirsty Parsons who is currently studying for her master's degree in data science at Lancaster University in the UK. Kirsty won the Scholarship for achieving outstanding grades for her Bachelor of Science. She was presented with the Scholarship at the CFNZ National Conference dinner earlier this month.
Kirsty, who is pictured here with Mark Ashford's family, was also named a CF Achiever in Education last month for her impressive record at Massey University - being named on the 2014 and 2015 Merit lists. She never expected to receive both the Scholarship and a CF Achiever Award in the same year. Kirsty plans to use her $3000 Scholarship for her studies in the UK.
The Scholarship is sponsored by Pink Batts in recognition of the contribution Mark Ashford made towards healthy homes at Fletcher Challenge before he passed away in 1996.
There were a lot of strong candidates for the Scholarship this year - we wish all the tertiary students the very best with their studies and future careers.

Conference 2016: CF Today and Tomorrow 
CFNZ's National Conference lived up to its theme of CF Today and Tomorrow, with a wide range of speakers offering information on all the latest therapies, research and treatment for PWCF.
Keynote Speaker Professor Scott Bell, who is the head of a lung bacteria research unit in Queensland and also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cystic Fibrosis, provided hope for the future, outlining the new drug therapies and techniques that are under development, and the much-improved life expectancy for PWCF.
Well over 100 people attended the Conference which was held in Auckland. There was a lot of interest in the personal stories from PWCF. There was standing room only at the session presented by Jamie Archibald and his wife Michelle who spoke of juggling CF with family and work commitments.
Alex McKay, who graduated with a law degree last year, provided his insight into life with CF, and helped finish the conference on a high note.
The conference dinner, hosted by CF Auckland, was a sparkly affair with a glitz, glamour and bling theme, and many diners were not afraid to dust off their diamantes. It featured the screening of the inspiring Mark Ashford Scholarship video to commemorate 20 years of this Scholarship, which received amazing feedback. Live Streaming: A big thank you also to Pub Charity for their generous grant of $10,000 for the second year in a row which allowed us to live stream main conference sessions over the CFN Z webite. This webcast was accessed more than 200 times - 143 on Day 1 and 93 on Day 2.

Update from the Board - by Kim McGuinness
The May Board meeting was held in Auckland on the Friday before our very successful annual conference.
At last year’s Chairpersons' Conference we started the process of looking at the different ways we fundraise. The Board has now approved funds to contract a fundraising expert to look at all the information to help shape and finalise a fundraising strategy that is achievable for CFNZ moving forward. So watch this space for some exciting options that we can all participate in to help make CFNZ sustainable.
On 4 April this year changes to New Zealand's Health and Safety Act came into effect, and that will impact CFNZ in many ways. The Board has been working to make sure that our team is covered under the new Act moving forward.
The Board now has an active working group of CF Adults to help improve adult services. If you are an Adult with CF and would like help please contact Lisa Borkus. Email borkust@xtra.co.nz.
CF Awareness Week this year is 15-21 August. If you have a CF story to tell please contact Vicky at comms@cfnz.org.nz or 09 308 9161 who will help get it out there. It is a great time to spread the message and raise much needed funds for CF. We are closely watching our budget towards the end of the financial year.
CFNZ will be in touch with branches about Awareness Week resources.

Hi Jude! Hello Jeanette
We would like to extend a warm welcome to Central North Island Fieldworker Jude Kelly who will be based in Wellington and cover the Lower North Island and Bay of Plenty. Jude is available on Email: jude@cfnz.org.nz or mobile 021 192 6234. Jude has a background in social work and counselling in hospitals, care and protection, schools, and service agencies. She can help people access support services available to them.
But next month we also say a sad goodbye to Melinda Coombes who has been the Northern Fieldworker for the past four years and has a relationship with many of the families. CFNZ has advertised for a new fieldworker and hopes to make a new appointment shortly. Melinda's last day is 3 June and we wish her the very best.
On a positive note, Natasha Banks-Fowler has accepted a permanent role as EA/Administration Manager with our organisation, and I'm pleased to announce the appointment of Jeanette Franklyn who is an experienced grant writer. She will be working 12 hours per week. Jeanette is a pharmacist by training and has worked with PWCF in the past. She is keen to look at ways of raising grants funding to match our organisational objectives and is very happy to assist with branch applications.

Good in the Hood time
If you haven't already seen the video promotion made by Z Energy that features CF Auckland you can do so here. So far it's been viewed more than 70,000 times which is pretty amazing. Don't forget to fill up at Z where there are CF token boxes - Newton, Mairangi Bay, Ellerslie, Ti Rakau Drive and Harris Road in Auckland, Taradale in Hawke's Bay, Seaview in Wellington, Whanganui, and Blenheim. Voting ends on Tuesday.

The closing date for Breath4CF grant applications is 23 June. It would be good if you could get your application forms in early June for processing. The grants cover most sports and physical activities.

Mall hairstyling a hit
Schwarzkopf's Hair Expert Mall Event which saw more than 500 people at shopping malls in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch getting hairstyles for a $10 donation to CF proved to be extremely popular. Held during the school holidays, lots of families took advantage of the offer and many donated more than $10,
which resulted in a great big cheque of $5000 to Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand this month.
We are very grateful to Schwarzkopf for naming CFNZ as the official charity for this event.
