Research Bulletin - May 2016 (Issue 5)

Today is International Clinical Trials Day – a day recognised around the world for the progress and life changing achievements made in clinical research since the first historic trial was undertaken by Dr James Lind over 250 years ago. The day provides a focal point to raise awareness of the importance of clinical research, reflect on successes and consider future challenges and opportunities. Considering the future, applications are now invited for the NRS/Universities Scottish Senior Clinical Fellowship Scheme 2016 (closing 12 June) and the Department of Health are recruiting an Independent Board Member (Industry) for Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research (OSCHR). We celebrate Professor Steve Cunningham, and his team from University of Edinburgh, winning UK Clinical Paper of the Year at the BMJ Awards 2016 and announce the appointment of Clinical Research Champions across Children's, Stroke and Diabetes networks. In this issue you can also read more on our plans for the NHS Research Scotland Annual conference; and look out for the new conference website launching next week. As always your ideas, feedback and contributions are welcomed.

NHS Research Scotland Annual Conference
Wednesday 26 October 2016

Next week we will launch our brand new NHS Research Scotland conference website. Taking place on Wednesday 26 October at the Queen Elizabeth Teaching and Learning Centre, Glasgow, we are delighted to confirm Paul Gray, Director General Health and Social Care and Chief Executive of NHS Scotland as our keynote speaker. The programme is being designed around key themes from the Health and Social Care Research Strategy and will not only demonstrate our approach to emerging areas of science and successful delivery of high profile trials, but also explore our supporting infrastructures, initiatives, engagement with patients and the public and our place on the international stage. A focus on health and social care research will also explore our ability to link information from health, social care and non-health sources to support better treatment, safety and research. If you are interested in contributing to the conference there will be opportunities to submit poster and oral abstracts when the conference website launches. You can stay up to date @NHSResearchScot #NRSConf16.
