School of Dolphins Plants Garden in Morro Bay!
May 20, 2016

Dear <<First Name>>,

Have you noticed how, every once in a while, we break out a tabloid-eque subject line to entice you into opening our emails? Unlike the tabloids, however, our "headlines" are always 100% true but sometimes not in the way you would expect. Inveterate punning lives!

But enough of that. Two Bloomies are very much enjoying their collaboration with a group of twelve opinionated fourth- and fifth-graders at Del Mar Elementary School. The Bloomies prepared a gardening class for Del Mar Discovery Days, a three-session, four-and-one-half hour elective class. Del Mar's principal, Janet Gould (whom we love, love, love), worked with the Bloomie braintrust to determine a project that would benefit the students and their school: A vacant 20 x 15 foot planter in front of the school's multi-purpose room. (By now, you've figured out that Del Mar's school mascots are dolphins, right?)

So, local artist, all-around lovely person and honorary Bloomie Aprille Lipton forned-up a dolphin out of garden-border edging on May 12 so that when our class began the next day, we'd be ready to go. Almost.

Now we're ready. Almost.

Now we're ready. OK. So, we're figuring that the archery and cooking classes must have filled up and the gardening class just happened to be these students second choice. If there was any disappointment felt, these students did a great job feigning enthusiasm for the project. Their energy was overwhelming. Ninety minutes flew by and, when lunchtime was upon us, several students asked if they could plant through lunch and into the afternoon! Every student thanked us. We were so busy interacting with students, we didn't take photos! We're hoping to take some photos today at our second session and to show them in next week's email.

Upcoming Events

You are invited to experience the joys of playing in the dirt as your time permits on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. unti 11 a.m. Rain (if that occurs again this year) cancels. We usually have 10-15 volunteers participating, so between an hour of socializing and an hour of actually working, we get a lot done!

May 21: Morro Bay Bike Park. Deadheading blossoms, top-dressing with organic matter, light weeding and mulching are planned.

May 28: Morro Bay Library. Meet in the Harbor Street Parking lot

If you are unable to play in the dirt, please consider helping Morro Bay in Bloom purchase more plants, benches, etc.! It takes lots of plants to fill even a small area (we estimate 25 one-gallon plants per 60 square feet). Send a tax-deductible contribution to Morro Bay in Bloom, P.O. Box 782, Morro Bay, CA 93443.

Always fesh and punilicious,
The Bloomies
