It has been a very quiet week at RGS as examinations have begun and pupils have had their heads down revising and racing the clock to complete their exams to the best of their ability. The atmosphere has certainly been one of academic endeavour and I congratulate the pupils so far for their conscientious approach. The internal exams continue until the end of school on Wednesday and, with GCSEs and AS Levels going on and the main A2 Level examinations starting after half term, we are well and truly into the assessment season.
The RGS Times this week is, therefore, a rather eclectic mix of stories including Enrichment, Cricket, Art, Athletics, and The Duke of Edinburgh Award event. We also remember a former RGS teacher, Dennis Hooker, who clearly holds very fond memories for those whom he taught.
Today we wished the Upper Sixth Form all the very best as they depart on study leave. They had their final assembly which, after 14 years at RGS for some of them, was a significant event and was followed by some celebrations of their final year at the School. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their contribution to RGS and wish them every success for the final challenge of their examinations.

Party at The Palace
On Monday, Mr Berry and I travelled down to London to attend the 60th Anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This gala event, which was held at Buckingham Palace, was attended by over 2,000 people and took place in the beautiful surroundings of The Palace Gardens. Read more here.
Fraternal Success in Cricket
Last Saturday there were many notable performances as all the teams won against Sir Thomas Rich’s School. Suleyman Shah took 6 wickets for 40 runs as the 1st XI bowled out the opposition for 133. At the same time, Suleyman’s brother, Affan, was taking a hat-trick for the Under 13 team as they won their match comfortably too, Ben Sutton scoring 53 and taking 5 wickets for only 4 runs. A Little Princess of Charity
Molly Farmer, Year Seven, has had 12 inches of her hair cut off for 'The Little Princess Trust' to make wigs for children who have lost their hair through illness. Molly says, "I'm donating my hair in memory of my Great Grandad for the Little Princess Trust because I want all children to have hair like me." Molly has also previously run the Race for Life to help raise funds for Cancer Research. Read more here.

Aeternum Vale - Dennis Clifford Hooker, RGS 1952 – 1979
A number of former RGS colleagues, alumni and current staff gathered together on Tuesday 17 May at St Mary’s Church, Kempsey to pay their respects to Dennis Hooker who died aged 90 and was a true one-off RGS legend. Dennis joined the School in 1952 straight from Loughborough University as part of the new generation of staff who joined in the wake of the appointment of AGK Brown as Headmaster. Read more here.
Interpreting Walter de la Mare for the Twenty-First Century
On Wednesday, the Upper Sixth had their last Enrichment session of the year. They have been a great year group to work with, producing an exciting array of Extended Project Qualification pieces and taking part in a number of short courses throughout the year, looking at topics as diverse as Ancient Greece, UK Politics, Power Drawing and Film-making. Athletics High Points
Jodie Ruane, Year Seven, beat her School record which she set earlier this season in the 1500m with a time of 5 minutes 8 seconds (but she still wants to break the five minute barrier).
Darian Moore, Year Eight, beat the Year Eight Long Jump record by a convincing 50 cm with a distance of 5.75 metres and Seb Thompson, Year Eight, beat the Year Eight 80 metre Hurdles record that has stood since 1990 by over a second with a time of 11.9 seconds.
Masterstrokes in Art
Whilst some have basked in the sunshine, 35 hours all told of GCSE, AS and A2 exams have occupied 54 young artists working with intense concentration to complete their final outcomes within the timed test period, The exams have undoubtedly produced some of the best recent artwork at RGS. Come and see the results of their labours for yourself at the Summer Show as part of the Creative Arts Faculty evening on Wednesday 29 June.
