Keep Durham Beautiful hosted the Keep Durham Beautiful Spring Golf Classic on Friday May 13th. The annual fundraiser, which took place at Hillandale Golf Course, raised over $3,500 to fund charitable community beautification projects and litter prevention throughout Durham.
In all 63 players participated in the tournament, along with 20 sponsoring companies and organizations who donated prizes and tee sponsorships, and many volunteers. Special thanks goes to our presenting lunch sponsor, Balfour Beatty Construction Company, enabling the participants to enjoy a barbeque lunch and awards ceremony to cap off the tournament.

This illegal dump site was so backed up with trash, that it blocked a stormwater pipe and caused a sinkhole! On May 22nd, 34 dedicated volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God partnered with Keep Durham Beautiful to clean up over 1,000 lbs of trash and clear brush on this vacant lot in the Lakewood-Tuscaloosa neighborhood. These effots would not have been possible without the help of several City of Durham departments - Public Works, Neighborhood Improvement Services, and General Services- who helped remove the collected debris and repair the road. We want to say thank you to everyone involved in these efforts to keep Durham clean, beautiful and safe!

Keep Durham Beautiful is excited to announce that Durham is now designated as a Bee City, USA. The Durham City Council passed the resolution Monday night committing to help protect our struggling bee populations. This commitment will help maintain a healthy ecosystem for the community. Thank you for Bee Downtown and members of the Durham City Council for helping to get this resolution passed.
Over the past several years the world’s bee population has been in decline because of Colony Collapse Disorder, pesticide use, and loss of habitat. Maintaining bee populations is important because they are major pollinators and are essential for both growing food and flowers. This affects both home gardeners and farmers alike.
Bee City, USA was first launched in Asheville, North Carolina as an initiative by Buncombe County Chapter of the NC State Beekeeper’s Association. Since then the program has been adopted by 19 cities around the country with Durham being the 20th. Durham’s acknowledgement of the importance of bees is another way the city is signaling itself as a leader in the United States.
