Update from Orienteering Canada

Welcome to our refreshed Orienteering Canada Newsletter. We were fortunate and pleased to have hired Katie McLean as our newsletter editor. Katie grew up orienteering with her family in Calgary and is currently living in Guelph. If you have anything you would like to contribute to the newsletter or just want to drop Katie a note - she can be reached at newsletter@orienteering.ca.
Strategic Plan
The Board of Directors has been busy the past few months working on our new strategic plan. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey in late 2015. Your feedback has been helpful as we work through the steps of creating the document that will guide our priorities and efforts for the next few years.
Major Events Committee
The new Major Events Committee has had its inaugural meeting recently. The purpose of this committee is to solicit hosts for, and ensure the success of, major orienteering events in Canada. A big thank you to Stefan Bergstrom, Pam James, Alex Kerr, Charlotte MacNaughton, John Rance, James Richardson and Jeff Teutsch for being a part of this new group. One of their first priorities will be recruiting hosts clubs for Canadian Championships for 2018 and 2019.
Canadian and North American Championships
The 2017 Canadian Orienteering Championships have been provisionally awarded to Orienteering Ottawa. A few details to settle, with more information coming to you over the summer.
The 2018 North American Orienteering Championships have been awarded to the Yukon Orienteering Association. Stay tuned for details of this event also. Looking forward to a trip to Whitehorse!
2017 Planning
2017 is Orienteering Canada’s 50th Anniversary! We want to make it a very special year and we are looking for ideas! To that end we are hosting a Club Connect Call on the evening of Sunday, June 26th. Everyone is invited to join in – please e-mail tracy@orienteering.ca if you can join us! The timing of the conference call meeting will be 4pm Pacific, or 8pm Atlantic, or whatever time zone you are in between.
Nominations for 2016/2017 O Can Board
Orienteering Canada is now accepting nominations for the 2016/2017 Board, to be elected at the 2016 AGM in Canmore on July 29. Three of the seven director positions are up for election. Anyone interested should e-mail info@orienteering.ca.
National Orienteering Week & World Orienteering Day
Thanks to all the clubs that hosted event during National Orienteering week. This was the 11th annual NOW! NOW gives us a chance to celebrate and acknowledge the orienteering that is going on across the country as well as giving both Orienteering Canada and the clubs a profile to do extra promotion.
May 11 was the first ever World Orienteering Day (WOD) initiated by the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). Over 2000 orienteering events were held in 81 countries and over 250,000 people around the world orienteered on that day. These numbers included 16 events across Canada with 1115 participants. Thanks to the event organizers in Canada and to the IOF for this initiative. The IOF has announced that next year’s WOD will be May 24, 2017.

We’ll be cheering on Canadian athletes this summer as they compete at the Junior World, World University and World Orienteering Championships in Europe. Be sure to follow along (and comment and cheer) on the Team Canada blog and on Orienteering Canada’s social media.

National Orienteering Week

National Orienteering Week (NOW) was another success! Clubs across Canada put on beginner friendly events from June 4-12th. Orienteering Canada did targeted Facebook advertising in the towns and cities that were hosting events and we did the number of clicks to www.nationalorienteeringweek.ca was quite high. We also saw about double the usual amount of traffic to www.orienteering.ca. Orienteering Canada updated the NOW Marketing Kit this year which has some great promo ideas!
It is fantastic that many clubs and associations organize many beginner friendly events throughout the year. We thoroughly encourage that at all times. Events held during National Orienteering Week get some special attention because of the extra promotion that Orienteering Canada does and potentially through the extra promotion that a club does, and it’s a nice way to connect orienteering clubs across the country.
Of course, NOW isn't the only time we can promote Orienteering in Canada. Try a few of these tips over the summer to encourage your friends to experience Orienteering!
- Encourage someone who is new to orienteering to give it a try.
- Bring a friend to an event.
- Pass along info about an event through your channels (word of mouth, social media, etc). Post great photos.
- Make sure that your event website has lots of relevant info for beginners. Try not to use too much "lingo" and try to include information that would be helpful for someone coming to an event for the first time.
- Reach out to relevant clubs and organizations in your area such as cadets groups, outdoor clubs, cross country running, xc ski and biathlon clubs
- Make your events accessible to individuals who may not have their own transportation. Set-up a carpool forum on your website and social media to reduce barriers to people like students or elderly athletes

New Orienteering Canada Resources to Teach Orienteering
Did you know Orienteering Canada recommends teaching kids to orient the map to the terrain before teaching them to use a compass? Check out our new Athlete Development Matrix Project to learn more!
Orienteering Canada’s long term athlete development model is progressing as we work on creating a comprehensive Athlete Development matrix, lesson plan bank and resources to help us better understand how to teach orienteering. On the LTAD webpage you will find a series of tools to help instructors, coaches, and program administrators implement this matrix throughout their programs. These new resources include a Technical Skills Progression document, a Technical Skills Development chart, a set of Lesson Plans for an 8-week junior program, and a Lesson Plan template that can be adapted to different programs.
We welcome feedback (via email to juniordevelopment@orienteering.ca or in person to Kate Knapp, Jeff Teutsch, or Kitty Jones) as we move this project along.

CALLING ALL COACHES, COOKS AND HELPERS!!
As usual, we are looking for volunteers to coach, cook, drive, and generally help out (e.g. supervise younger kids at bedtime).
We need adults to volunteer to help coach at all levels from beginner to advanced. We also need adults to volunteer to help prepare the meals (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 suppers). Whether you are a National Team athlete (either current or past), or a parent of a camp participant, please consider offering your time, as this camp relies 100% on volunteers.
All adult volunteers will receive free room and board at the camp. Sorry – no honoraria! But you’ll be making a big contribution to the Canadian orienteering scene and have fun while doing so!

Congratulations to Emily Kemp on a great middle distance race in Jesenik, Czech Republic at the European Orienteering Championships. Emily has been a dedicated athlete for years and continuously makes Orienteering Canada proud of our representation on the international stage.

Coach Communiqué
THE LATEST FROM ORIENTEERING CANADA'S COACHING PROGRAM
Last week Tracy Bradley and I attended the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) Partner’s Day celebrations here in Ottawa with representatives from all the Provincial/Territorial Sport organizations and officials from the 66 affiliated National Sport Organizations.
Besides the usual “breakout†sessions on what is new and happening in coaching, it was an opportunity to recognize the efforts of the P/TSO’s and NSO’s for the recent development of new contexts in their respective National Coaching Certification Programs (NCCPs).
The Minister for Sport, the Hon. Carla Qualtrough, was there to congratulate everyone on their achievements and to promise support for coaching programs in the future. Orienteering did not achieve Final Approval of our new Competitive Stream (Comp-Intro) program in time to receive a plaque and photo-op with the CAC brass at the meeting, but the beautiful Orienteering-Canada logo was proudly up on the 2016 Competitive Stream Achievements Poster next to all the “big sportsâ€.
We have a updated NCCP web site that we hope will provide all the background information for those of you interested in training and certification.

LOOKING BACK INTO THE ORIENTEERING CANADA ARCHIVES
Katie McLean from Calgary (Daughter of John and Joan McLean) isn't so little anymore! After graduating with a Psychology degree from the University of Guelph last summer, Katie has been working in Guelph and taking every opportunity to travel. She recently started a new job... with Orienteering Canada! Katie is our new newsletter editor and created the very newsletter you are reading right now. She is excited to be involved with Orienteering Canada and looks forward to delivering interesting and engaging content to Orienteers across Canada.

Orienteering Ontario's New Board
WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS
Orienteering Ontario elected its new executive recently. Chris Laughren is the new President. Kris Gadjanski will serve as Vice President and James Richardson will continue as Treasurer. Barb Campbell will provide support as Past President. Other directors for 2016/17 are Ian Sidders, Amber Panchyshyn, Wayne Leek , Harper Forbes and Heidi Langenberg. Congratulations to the new members!
