THE Port @ World Humanitarian Summit 2016, Istanbul

Head of states, business leaders, scientists and the humanitarian world came together at the 1st ever United Nations World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) on the 23rd -24th May in Istanbul. Invited to show humanitarian innovation, THE Port presented with 5 participants how methods of fundamental science can accelerate humanitarian innovation. In two exhibition booths at the Innovation Marketplace we showed prototypes of THE Port hackathon teams: the e3e Explosion Monitor, the SSRA Better Body Bag, the Medyas.ch Sensor Sock for babies with clubfoot, the next generation of air drop food bags, as well as many machine learning, big data analysis & visualisation, natural language and data processing prototypes. The WHS is an initiative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon to develop a humanitarian system that was more global, accountable, and robust.

Launch of the Global Humanitarian Lab (GHL)

While in Istanbul, we also attended the launch of the Global Humanitarian Lab (GHL), to which THE Port is a partner. The Global Humanitarian Lab acts both as an incubator to develop ideas into solutions and an accelerator to scale solutions for the humanitarian sector. Read the full story at the GHL website.

Hackathons as a ground for creating start-ups: Evidence from THE Port 2014
It’s been a while since hackathons were limited to the basements of the neighbourhood nerds. Through a study of THE Port Hackathon 2014, this thesis sheds light on how hackathons can be labelled as a ground for creating start-ups.
