First Project Verified, Over 2 Million tCO2 validated
May 2016
Exciting times for woodland carbon projects
Cairns Farm, West Lothian, Scotland, has become the first woodland carbon project in the UK to be ‘verified’ as continuing to meet the standards of the Woodland Carbon Code after ‘passing’ its first five-yearly progress inspection. Meanwhile, in another important milestone, the amount of carbon predicted to be sequestered, or absorbed from the atmosphere, by trees in code-‘validated’ woodlands has passed 2 million tCO2. View press release.
New Validation/Verification Body - Soil Association
Soil Association have joined the ranks as a body willing to validate/verify Woodland Carbon Code projects. They are currently working towards accreditation. They join Acoura (formerly known as Scottish Food Qualify Certification). Contact details are available for both.
Buyer Focus: Waitrose
Waitrose, a quality food retailer, have been working with the Woodland Trust since 2011. They have purchased over 20,000 tCO2 and enabled the creation of over 50 hectares of woodland in Cumbria, to help compensate for the tailpipe emissions of their waitrose.com home delivery fleet. Buying woodland carbon has raised Waitrose’s environmental and corporate responsibility credentials, and improved staff engagement through tree planting days. Read the Waitrose Case Study.
Project Focus: Benson Wood, Shropshire
Benson Wood is a small woodland carbon project in Shropshire, developed by Edenviro Ltd. Creating just 0.5 hectares of new native woodland, it will sequester 277 tCO2 over the next 100 years, and will help stabilize land which previously suffered from soil erosion. The project used the outputs of a local Anaerobic Digestion plant as compost and fertilizer. Read the Benson Wood Case Study.
