Linden is a common street tree that can be identified by its characteristic heart-shaped leaves and lime tongue-like bracts, from which masses of cream-colored flowers extend. In a few weeks, the flowers will be a'bloom - sweetening the air with their honey scent that draws hordes of honeybees - and in season for harvesting and drying for a soothing herbal tea that tastes lightly of citrus cream. Linden is a perfect ally for soothing nervous tension, headaches, stress, insomnia, and upset stomachs, and is popular remedy throughout Latin America and Europe. Green Dean of "Eat the Weeds" recommends in his video on Linden to eat the raw leaves of the cordata spp. (little leaf linden) as a tender spring green.
- Local herbalist Alyssa Schimmel cooks up a different wild edible creation every "Wild Wednesday". Last week's treat was a delightful Linden and Lemon Myrtle Lemonade, sweetened with cardamom and pink peppercorn syrup. Email her for more info on location and times! -
