Everybody Deserves Financial Freedom

“Poverty is the worst form of violence,” Gandhi said. As someone who grew up poor, I know how it feels to be blamed for your own hardships and to internalize shame.

I’m inspired by grassroots initiatives working to supplant poverty and illuminate solutions: sliding-scale farm stands, community gardens, scholarships for kids’ summer camps, free tutoring at public libraries, barter networks, housing programs for the homeless, and so on.

Part of the larger scale solution is Universal Basic Income (learn more about that on the latest Peace Paradigm Radio show—see the link below). I’ve known too many brilliant people dimmed by poverty. Imagine if we all had the freedom to bond with our children, take a class, and have a place to sleep and food to eat. That world is possible, and we can get there, bit by bit.

Nonviolent Economy

Peter Barnes, author of With Liberty and Dividends for All: How to Save Our Middle Class When Jobs Don’t Pay Enough, joins us on Peace Paradigm Radio to discuss Universal Basic Income (UBI) and income as a human right. Plus, we cover real-life experiments with UBI and other aspects of a nonviolent economy. Hear or download the latest episode.
