- This month CloudCalc was profiled in an article on the www.Eng-base.com web site. Eng-base is an online community for engineers who need software, presenting a single source for the information they need to find, evaluate, and price that software. You can read the article here.

- On May 10, 2016, Tom Van Laan, CloudCalc’s CEO, served as a panelist at a presentation entitled “Lessons Learned for Entrepreneurs”, held at New York Institute of Technology’s Entrepreneurship and Technology Center in Old Westbury, NY. Thanks to the 100+ in attendance!

- In April, we announced that CloudCalc had reached 2500 registered users…and this month we passed 3000! Thanks to everyone who has helped make the experiment of Structural Analysis in the Cloud a success so far. Software Update News:
This month we delivered our 29th update of the software since its initial launch in June, 2014. Remember – since CloudCalc is delivered on the cloud, you are automatically up to date every time you access the software, without having to install anything new. And our updates are always upward compatible, so you never have to convert old models to run on the latest version of the software.

The highlight of this release is the inclusion of the structural steel profiles of IMCA, the Instituto Mexicano de la Construcción en Acero, A.C., as specified in the 5th Edition of the Manual de Construccion en Acero.

The IMCA profile types added to CloudCalc’s online library include IR (Perfil I Rectangular), IE (Perfil I Estándar), IS (Perfil I Soldado), TR (Perfil T Rectangular), LI (Ángulo de Lados Iguales), LM (Ángulo de Lados Iguales Milimétrico), LD (Ángulo de Lados Desiguales), CE (Perfil C Estándar), OR (PTE Rectangular and PTE Cuadrado), and OC (PTE Circular).
With the addition of the IMCA profiles, CloudCalc’s database now includes over 6500 structural sections, from the AISC (English and Metric), BS (British), IS (Indian), and now the IMCA (Mexican) specifications.
CloudCalc users are reminded that they can tailor their Local Member Library (the working list of steel sections) to include any of the sections present in the online database, through use of the Tools->Catalog->Member Types Menu command. This command brings up a window with which the desired Specification (i.e., IMCA) and the section types (i.e., IR, TR, etc.) can be selected. Clicking [OK] lists all online section profiles matching that criteria, any of which can then be added to the Local Member Library by Clicking Add to Local on that line item.

I love developing software.
I tell everybody that this profession is the new artistic frontier; with the software developer being the creative successor to the cave painter, Michelangelo, Picasso, and so forth. Anything we can imagine, we can create – and with the tools available today, we can create quickly. On a typical day I might wake up with new inspiration — some amazing new graphic trick, some slick tweak to the UI, or a game-changing feature; have it incorporated into CloudCalc by noon; show it off to – and get some wows from — a couple of lay people (who have no idea what engineers actually do); run it through some testing; and then release it to the world in time to knock off work around mid-to-late evening.
