A Thousand Letters Delivered to Mayor de Blasio to Save Our Garden, Please Keep Them Coming!

On May 25, Friends of Elizabeth Street Garden volunteers joined New Yorkers for Parks and parks users, gardeners and advocates from across the city to make sure that the mayor and city council know that we need quality parks and open space.

Garden volunteers submitted nearly a thousand of YOUR letters to the mayor opposing New York City’s plan to issue a Request for Proposal to developers to build affordable housing that would destroy Elizabeth Street Garden.

We still need your help:
  1. Write the mayor and forward this action to your neighbors and friends asking them to write a letter too.
  2. Share this tweet and Facebook post.
  3. Join the discussion on social media. Use #elizabethstreetgarden and #ESGSaveOurGarden.
Thanks to our supporters who have already sent letters to the mayor!

Please share a dish with others: bring an appetizer, salad or side if your last name begins with A – S and a dessert if your last name begins with T – Z. Shared dishes need not feed everyone; a contribution of 6 – 10 servings is plenty. Burgers and hot dogs will be provided by Friends of Elizabeth Street Garden. No alcoholic beverages please.

Volunteers keep the Garden open for our community. The more volunteers there are, the more hours the Garden can be open. Volunteering is flexible and simply involves welcoming visitors for just ONE hour at a time. Some volunteers volunteer each week, and other less frequently. Become a volunteer.

If you would like to volunteer but cannot make this time, please email volunteer@elizabethstreetgarden.org.

Next Week: Memoir Writing Workshop & Weekly Children's Music

Seeds of a Memoir Writing Workshop
Tuesdays, June 7, June 28, July 12, and July 26, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
This workshop, led by Barbara Horn, English professor emerita at Nassau Community College, includes exercises that help us discover, reflect, recall and create. With the Garden as backdrop, participants – especially seniors – are encouraged to remember long-ago and perhaps far-away places as they begin work on memoir writing. Reading pieces with other members is encouraged but not required.

Weekly Children's Music Tuesdays, 11 – 11:30 a.m.
Live music, dancing, bubbles and fun with volunteers actress-singer Lauren Ruff and guitarist Pete Armstrong. We’ll provide music and percussion instruments for your little ones to sing, dance or play along. Bring the family and pack a picnic lunch for afterward.
