Solar Prep Updates!

We've had a wonderful week at Solar Prep!  Thank you to those that attended our family meetings.  If you didn't get a chance to attend, all of the information is below.

In this issue, you will learn about Counselor Tajmah Bailey and Community Liaison Rosanne Ortega.

Tajmah Bailey was raised in Dallas and graduated from Dallas ISD's Talented and Gifted Magnet.  She has served Dallas ISD students for 17 years.  Tajmah hopes to improve and enrich the lives of others at Solar Prep. She wants to make a positive difference.  Tajmah lives in Desoto with her husband and their kids.

Rosanne Ortega is a native Dallasite who graduated from North Dallas High School. She is a voracious reader and has worked in education for over 20 years.  Rosanne's hope for Solar Prep is to provide and assist with building successful young women who will impact change in our local landscape.  Rosanne lives near downtown and is the proud parent of two girls who graduated from Booker T. Washington. 
Here is the information we shared at the family meetings this week. Click on each link for more information.

Academic Calendar. Due to our extended day, Solar Prep's academic calendar is slightly different from other schools. Please mark these dates on your calendar. 

Solar Prep Uniforms. This is a guide for our standard dress policy. The second page includes a list of vendors for each item. We ask that you purchase the skirts and jumpers from our vendor as this is our official uniform.  Please contact us if you have any questions.  

Transportation. Patricia Baumer, Director of Operations Planning, shared information about  buses.  Please email her at pbaumer@dallasisd.org if you have any questions.

PowerPoint Presentation.  This is the presentation of all the information we shared with families. 


Parent & Family Engagement.  Please click on the links below to let us know if you'd like more information on any of these groups. You are welcome to sign up for as many committees as you'd like.  Ms. Ortega will reach out to those interested in mid June.  Thanks for your support. 

Parent Staff Association Sign-Up - This group will work with our community liaison on volunteer opportunities, fundraising, and special event planning. 

Site Based Decision Making Committee Sign-Up - This group serves as an advisory board to the principal.  The committee is comprised of parents, staff, community, and business members.  This committee will meet a minimum of 5 times a year.

Dad's Club Sign-Up - This group is open to all male figures in a Solar Prep girl's life.

Meet & Greet from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Come and go as you wish.
This will be an informal event designed to give our families the opportunity to meet each other in a beautiful setting. Families are welcome to enjoy the Arboretum all day.

Admission and parking are free for Solar Prep families
(Must arrive between 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.)

Please help us bring the YMCA Afterschool program to Solar Prep by registering by June 3rd.  We need 40 families to register in order to have the program at Solar Prep.  The first 50 families that register get the $50 registration fee waived.  The cost is $45 per week and financial aid is available.

Please return your enrollment packet by June 3, 2016.  You can bring them to our office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday.

SOLAR PREP BRIGHT IDEA LAB

MAKERSPACE

Thank you to all who have already donated items for our makerspace. We truly appreciate your generosity and willingness to stock our BRIGHT IDEA Lab.

Solar Prep has formed a partnership with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas to support our STEAM and Social Emotional Initiatives. Through a generous donation from Girl Scouts, every Solar Prep scholar will have the opportunity to participate in Girl Scouts during the school day free of charge. Every two weeks, Solar Prep art, music, and PE teachers will gather with the girls for Girl Scouts club time, which will include a STEM curriculum developed just for girls.

Please complete the Girl Scouts enrollment form included in your enrollment packet. There is no need for you to include payment. Girl Scouts and Solar Prep are covering all of the costs.

Solar Prep is a Dallas ISD Transformation School with open enrollment. For more information about Public School Choice and why Dallas ISD decided to implement this initiative, please visit the Public School Choice site.
