Soccer Stadium Updates: Open House & Public Hearing

The City will be hosting a Public Open House on Tuesday, June 7 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. to present the Stadium Site Plan, Midway Center Master Plan, and Alternative Urban Areawide Review (environmental review and transportation study). The meeting will include a presentation and schedule of next steps, Q&A, and the opportunity to share your comments, and will be held at Concordia University's Buenger Education Center, 312 Hamline Avenue N.

The Saint Paul Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the Site Plan, Master Plan, and zoning clarification amendment on Friday, June 10, 8:30 a.m. in Room 40 of City Hall. Comments can be directed to Kady Dadlez of the Department of Planning & Economic Development at kady.dadlez@ci.stpaul.mn.us. Written comments received by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 13 will go to the Planning Commission as public testimony.

We've updated our website's Stadium Updates. Check out the City's Snelling-Midway Redevelopment Site for more information.

Celebrate the A-Line Launch

Join Metro Transit in celebrating the Bus Rapid Transit A-Line Launch on June 11 from 10 am - 2 pm at the southeast corner of Snelling and University (in the American Bank parking lot). This fun event will include live music, food trucks, vendors, kids' activities and more.

The A-Line is a new kind of bus service for the Twin Cities’ busiest urban streets with transit enhancements that add up to a faster trip and improved experience.

Be the first to ride the new A-Line and enjoy the other celebrations along the route (which runs from 46th Street in Minneapolis to Rosedale). Service is free all weekend so be sure to explore all of the great communities, businesses, and destinations it will connect.

Community Paint Day

Local Hamline-Midway artist, Kada Goalan, has begun painting murals on the new Whole Foods building at Snelling and Selby, one facing Dayton and the other facing Selby. The art will reflect the historic features of the neighborhood.

Kada invites residents of Union Park to help paint parts of the murals during a community painting day on Sunday, June 12th at noon.  Check out a recent interview with Kada to learn more about her and her inspiration for the murals.

Please contact michael@unionparkdc.org if you have ideas for other community art projects in Union Park or would like to make an in-kind or monetary donation.

Pop-Up Adventure Play

On Saturday, June 18th Pop-Up Adventure Play will take over Aldine Park from noon to 5 p.m. Kids are welcome to come explore, imagine, and create their own playground, using provided items including cardboard, wood, fabric, paint and more. Adventure Play staff will be on site, but children direct the play. Union Park staff will also be on hand to answer questions about our organization and projects in our community. Please join us for this free event!

Electronics Recycling

On Saturday, June 18th from 9 a.m. to noon you can drop off unwanted electronics at the Dunning Park softball field parking lot.  Click here to see what electronics are accepted.

Please email michael@unionparkdc.org if you have questions or are interested in volunteering for this event.

Help Green the Neighborhood

Join us on June 10, 11, and 12th when we plant new greenery on St. Anthony Avenue between Snelling and Fairview. We're seeking volunteers to dig, plant, and mulch.

Check out our website for more information. Please email michael@unionparkdc.org if you have questions or are interested in volunteering for this event.

Recycling Video Debut

Ever wonder how Eureka Recycling sorts out the hundreds of tons of recyclables it receives each day? Watch the new ten-minute video, "The Story of a Cereal Box," to learn how people, gravity, magnets, electrical currents, lasers and puffs of air are used to sort out all the things we recycle. And, find out what happens to it all after it's sorted, and why recycling really matters to our community, local economy and environment.

Organized Trash Collection

City of St. Paul Public Works staff will present its organized trash hauling report and recommendations on June 1, at 5:30 pm in City Hall's third floor Council Chambers. A public hearing will follow the presentation.

The full report is posted on the city's trash hauling web page. The report is the result of analysis of previous trash reports, plus opinions and concerns more recently voiced by more than 2000 residents through surveys and meetings. The City has also used the Mac Groveland Organized Trash Survey and the Wilder Foundation Study to guide their report.

If you can't attend the public hearing you can either email city staff at allinprogram@ci.stpaul.mn.us and your email will become part of the public record.

Tips on Panhandling

From the Saint Paul Police Department: Panhandling is not illegal, and whether to give to a panhandler is an individual decision. However, panhandling success in a particular area encourages others, and the numbers of panhandlers will grow. People may feel they’re helping the homeless when they give, but not all panhandlers are homeless. If you want to help, choose the charity of your choice and give when you want to, not when you are solicited on a street corner. Or, consider giving panhandlers things they might need -- clean socks, granola bars, water bottle, bus pass, or a gift card.

Aggressive Solicitation is illegal. This is defined as vocal requests for money at a variety of restricted locations, including a restroom, park, crosswalk, bus stop, stopped car, sidewalk café, or within 20 feet of an ATM. It is also illegal to touch an individual being solicited, block their path, follow the person, or solicit in a group of two or more.

If you are uncomfortable in the presence of a panhandler, avoid eye contact. If you feel threatened or intimidated, call 911. If you choose not to donate, the best response is to politely say "no" and walk away. For more information, contact Pam McCreary at SPPD’s Western District.

National Night Out August 2

Plan now for National Night Out! Join this nationwide event by hosting a block party to strengthen relationships with your neighbors and improve the livability of your block. The City provides free barricades on National Night Out -- check out the City's site for more information and permit forms. Contact michael@unionparkdc.org if you have questions.

A great place to live

Union Park was named a Great Place to Live in a recent Mpls. St. Paul Magazine article. And, there's a dedicated group of neighbors working on promoting our community. Learn about their work and upcoming sessions they're hosting by reading about the Housing Mix Working Group on our website.
