EDITORIAL
La Institución Internacional SEK se ha caracterizado permanentemente por la promoción de los idiomas en los diversos países donde tenemos presencia. Para fomentar en los alumnos el aprendizaje de un idioma se deben tomar en cuenta varios aspectos como son la lectura, la escritura, la producción y la audición. Es así, que se desarrollan diversas actividades en las cuales los alumnos pueden aplicar sus conocimientos de manera entretenida, lúdica, pero no menos seria, entre las cuales podemos destacar: el Spelling Bee Intercolegial de primaria, el Spelling Bee interno de secundaria, el English Song Festival, el English Day, etc. 

La semana pasada hemos organizado, por cuarto año consecutivo, el Spelling Bee Intercolegial para alumnos de primaria. Tal como se espera de todas las actividades que organiza el Colegio, puedo señalar con satisfacción que dicho evento mostró una vez más un excelente nivel de organización y un gran compromiso de los profesores del área de inglés de primaria. Pero lo que nos ha dado mayor satisfacción es haber obtenido tres primeros lugares de las cuatro categorías en las que se participó, lo cual demuestra el nivel que han ido alcanzando nuestros alumnos y el trabajo realizado en aula por sus profesores. 

Junto con los logros del idioma inglés, quisiera destacar que varios de nuestros alumnos que estudian el chino-mandarín, están rindiendo exámenes para obtener certificados en diversos niveles de esta lengua.

FOURTH INTERSCHOOL SPELLING BEE CONTEST AT SEK LOS VALLES

The Spelling Bee is a competition that aims to increase the students’ confidence in the spelling of words. Another important advantage of having this event, is that all the students that participate have an enjoyable experience that it will be kept in their minds forever.

In order to accomplish the contest, the English Department of Primary at SEK Los Valles organizes the Annual Interschool Spelling Bee Contest. This year, nine schools were invited to be part of this magnificent event that took place on Thursday, May 19th. The schools were: Unidad Educativa Hontanar, Centro Educativo Isaac Newton, Unidad Educativa Letort, Intisana, APCH Unidad Educativa Angel Polibio Chaves, Colegio Spellman, Colegio Rudolf Steiner, SEK Ecuador International School, and SEK Los Valles International School.

This competition was divided into four categories where students from fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh grade competed against one another to represent their schools. These kind of events bring excitement, nervousness, and anxiousness among the competitors and the people involved. Parents, teachers and classmates gathered together in the auditorium to cheer up the contestants.

The sky is the limit for our SEK LOS VALLES’ students who were crowned champs after besting other spellers from the invited schools. The winners in the different categories were: Francisco Albuja, first place of the First Category, Santiago Zborón obtained the fourth place in the Second Category, Paula Bastidas won first place in the Third Category and Juan José Silva got the first place in the Fourth Category. Our students made us proud due to their outstanding performance and commitment while they were studying, preparing, and participating in this Bee Contest.

We are sure that what the participants did and felt during the Bee Contest was incredible because standing in front of an audience and showing their spelling skills is not an easy task to do.

We appreciate and thank the support given by our School head, sponsors, judges, and the English Department who made this event possible.

INTERSEK CULTURAL
El InterSEK CULTURAL 2016, organizado por el Colegio Internacional SEK Ecuador, fue el escenario que reunió a 16 delegaciones de los países donde la Institución tiene presencia. Este evento promovió una convivencia fraterna entre jóvenes de 12 a 15 años.

Los estudiantes que participaron en este evento demostraron sus habilidades en concursos como: ajedrez, banda musical, danza, misterio de Guápulo y fotografía, entre otros. En esta edición del InterSEK, nuestros estudiantes pudieron explorar los componentes esenciales de nuestra cosmovisión, por medio de la poesía y la música. 

Sek-Cranium, propulsión de cohetes y la banda musical fueron los actividades en las que tuvimos una destacada participación, obteniendo el segundo lugar.

ASAMBLEA MAYO
El valor del presente mes es ser "reflexivos". En este espacio, los estudiantes pusieron en práctica este valor y nos permitieron revalorar la importancia de nuestra historia como instrumento esencial de la construcción de la nacionalidad, cultura e identidad ecuatoriana.

De esta manera, en la asamblea se resaltó la importancia de la Batalla de Pichincha para la construcción de una sociedad justa, democrática y autónoma. Los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria representaron la estructura social de la colonia y el pensamiento a través de la caracterización y declamación.

Les invitamos a reflexionar sobre la importancia de este valor en sus vidas.

TORNEO NACIONAL DE NATACIÓN
Del 12 al 14 de mayo se llevó a cabo en la ciudad de Cuenca la XIV edición de la Copa Tomebamba de natación, a la cual asistieron 24 delegaciones de diversas provincias como Guayas, Pichincha, El Oro, Manabí, Zamora, Imbabura, y los clubes más destacados en este deporte.

María Cristina y Fidel Padilla, alumnos de primaria, nos representaron en esta competencia obteniendo excelentes ubicaciones. María Cristina se situó entre las ocho mejores nadadoras a nivel nacional en estilo pecho. Por su parte, Fidel  obtuvo dos preseas de oro en las pruebas de relevos 4x50 libre y 4x50 combinado.

Felicitamos a nuestros estudiantes por su destacada participación y les deseamos éxitos en sus futuras competencias.

From the Classroom
Early Years 2 & PYP 6 Moravian Sandwiches
 
We are so grateful to have the Year 6's help us make our Moravian sandwiches. The children really enjoy this exercise and it is so interesting to see the different methods the Year 6's use to teach the children how to make the sandwich.

So many skills are being taught such as: concentration, fine motor, listening, follow an instruction but most importantly they are learning to be caring by helping other children who don't get lunch everyday.

Boaders blog 
 
Saturday was an exciting day. First, the boarders hiked to the beautiful beach of Ladram Bay, following the South-West Coast path over Peak Hill and Great Peak. We met some horses along the way (see pictures). We were blessed with sunshine so we enjoyed a packed lunch on the beach before we headed back. At night, our boarders watched the Eurovision Contest. They cheered along their own countries and their favorite performances.
 
On Sunday, the boarders could choose what they wanted to do. Some signed out to go into Sidmouth, others studied for their exams or played Rounder's on the field. Another option was baking club - they made some delicious chocolate chip cookies.
