Indianapolis Celebrates Fifth Annual Canoe to Work Day with Mayoral Proclamation

Indianapolis (May 26, 2016) – Indianapolis Mayor Joseph Hogsett has proclaimed June 3, 2016 “Central Indiana Canoe to Work Day.” Originally launched in 2012 by Christopher B. Burke Engineering, LLC. (Burke Engineering), the event has been held annually early each summer.

Burke Engineering, an Indiana firm committed to protecting our water resources through planning and engineering solutions, started the event as a way to highlight the important role our waterways play in shaping the communities where we live, work, and play. This year marks the fifth anniversary of Canoe to Work Day, which has grown to a community-wide initiative that encourages all of Central Indiana, from commuters to families, to explore our waterways.

“I’m not sure it is the most efficient way to commute, but taking the time to paddle to work once a year is a great experience,” said Brian McKenna, director of design engineering for the firm. “It’s a morning of outdoor fun, but it also reminds us all of the importance of the work that we do every day with water quality, drainage, combined sewer overflows (CSOs), dams, levees and flood mapping.  It’s easy to take our waterways for granted when you are in your car, but that’s not the case when you are in the stream seeing everything up close.”

In addition to drawing attention to Indiana’s waterways and the importance of these valuable resources, the annual commute by canoe is a great way to promote a corporate culture of fitness and wellness. Canoe to Work Day complements strong bike to work programs across Central Indiana and, specifically, at Burke Engineering.

Canoe to Work Day is not just occurring in the Indianapolis metro area. Groups are slated to enjoy Canoe to Work Day across the state, from St. Joseph’s River in the north to the Wabash River to the south. Burke Engineering is proud to acknowledge this year’s Canoe to Work Day partners: The City of Indianapolis, Citizens Energy Group, White River Canoe Company, Indianapolis Zoo, Bee Coffee Roasters and Brickhouse Coffee Roasters.
