Culmination in Makawao

The students and extended ‘ohana of Samuel E. Kalama Intermediate School in Makawao, Maui celebrated the dedication of a stainless steel sculpture titled Culmination on Thursday, April 28, 2016.

Artist Matthew Salenger worked with students at Kalama Intermediate School as an Artist in Residence to visualize what they value about their island's history, culture and environment. The sculpture speaks to how "all of us are the culmination of everything that has come before us."

Culmination depicts the demi-god Maui pulling on the sun to slow it down, surrounded by flowing wai (fresh water) and kukui leaves. The left shows what the first people to arrive brought to the Hawaiian islands. On the right is what has been brought since. Images at the top were generated by students.

Artist Matthew Salenger was born and raised in upcountry Maui, and now lives in Arizona.

The Art in Public Places — Artists in Residence Program was established to integrate the visual arts in education while also providing commissioned works of art in public schools. The program is a collaboration between the Department of Education and HSFCA.

First Friday and HiSAM Exhibitions Friday June 3, 2016

Join the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts for the monthly First Friday celebration of the arts from 6 to 9 p.m. The Alumni Chamber Music Series of the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony will be performing live on the second floor.

All museum galleries will be open, including the newest exhibit, Ho‘omau: The Perpetuation of Kapa, displaying kapa pieces from the Art in Public Places collection. The film Ka Hana Kapa is being shown in the gallery on a continuous loop and documents the history of kapa in Hawai‘i and follows the complex process of Hawaiian kapa making from start to finish.

Discover a new way to “draw with paper” and learn quilling. Bring the whole family down for hands-on activities for HiSAM's June edition of the Second Saturdays series. You’ll leave with frame-ready artwork and the skill to try it at home! Materials will be provided. Activities run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, HiSAM galleries are open until 4 p.m.

Okinawan Dance Then and Now
Explore Okinawan culture through a dance demonstration and lecture from the Hooge Ryu Hana Nuuzi no Kai Nakasone Dance Academy. Led by Grandmaster Lynne Yoshiko Nakasone, the academy will share the evolving vibrancy of Okinawan culture from a traditional court dance to new choreography. Art Lunch is held on the last Tuesday of the month from 12 noon - 1 p.m.

Hawaii‘i represents at Poetry Out Loud nationals!
Hawai‘i State Champion and Punahou School sophomore Nicholas Amador placed third in the National Poetry Out Loud Competition in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, May 4, 2016.

HSFCA partners with UH Mānoa Outreach College's Statewide Cultural Extension Program, to bring free cultural presentations to public libraries across the state. In June and July, the public can enjoy mask making, Chinese paper crafts, shadow dancing, performances by Hoku Award winner Lee Eisenstein and much much more. "Finding Balance" at the 2016 Teaching Artist Institute

70 teaching artists and arts administrators attended the 2016 Teaching Artist Institute, “Finding Balance,” on March 17 at Hanahauoli School and March 18 at HiSAM. This was the fourth annual institute offered as professional development for SFCA’s Artists in the Schools roster of teaching artists. The first day, groups rotated through three sessions: “Asking Questions to Develop Creativity,” “Assessment,” and a “fishbowl” conversation protocol. On the second day, artist Garnett Puett, whose honeycomb sculpture Chief is in the Ewa Gallery, was the keynote speaker. Participants were then led through an Art Bento-type experience by fellow teaching artists who work in that program. Art Bento is HiSAM’s program for elementary schools that actively engages students in responding to artworks on view.

An SFCA Acquisition Award Selection Committee visited the WOOD INK FIBER 2016 exhibit at the invitation of the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa on Hawai‘i Island. WOOD INK FIBER 2016 is a state-wide juried exhibition of woodblock printing and is open to the public for viewing in the Donkey Mill Art Center galleries until July 9, 2016.
