John McCarthy Inspires at Annual Meeting
Surrounded by the glorious art in the Aigantighe Art Gallery the Aoraki Foundation launched a new brand and a renewed focus for the future. We were fortunate to have John McCarthy, Manager Tindall Foundation attend and speak on behalf of Sir Stephen and Lady Margaret Tindall. The Tindall Foundation has been the integral driver behind all NZ's Community Foundations. John's speech covered many aspects of the Community Foundation model and emphasised the power of "catalytic philanthropy", to read more from John's speech go to  latest news

Lesley Roy (Chairperson Aoraki Foundation) speaks to Public Meeting.

Public Meeting Aoraki Foundation
Since the inception of the Aoraki Foundation in 2009 the South Canterbury community's perception of the foundation is as the vehicle for some extremely successful public fundraising projects. In particular the facilitation of the local MRI fundraising campaign and the raising of $5 million of private funds for the CBAY development.
However going forward and under the new chairmanship of Lesley Roy, Mackenzie mayoral representative, the Aoraki Foundation will now focus on endowment giving, inspiring South Canterbury people to “Give where they Live”.
The Aoraki Foundation outlined the new direction at our recent public meeting. To help us promote this new direction  we were pleased to welcome John McCarthy, manager of The Tindall Foundation to share his experiences with other community organisations in New Zealand and around the world.
John highlighted the importance of foundations and their role within communities. "The Aoraki Foundation has achieved considerable success and has made a significant difference to communities across South Canterbury".

A New Look for the Aoraki Foundation.

The Aoraki Foundation will now have a brilliant new brand, thanks to the work of Anna Guinan and Ryan Carter of Goanna Design.
Anna and Ryan immediately understood and grasped what a Community Foundation was about. They have designed a concept that truly reflects all aspects of our foundation, moving away from a corporate fundraiser to a place to give to your community “Now and For Ever”.
Goanna Design has created the entire concept and design at a very generous rate, reflecting their philanthropic character and belief in giving back to the community you live in.
At the recent Public meeting Anna spoke on her concept. A few snippets of her speech:
"We started by determining that we needed to look to celebrate the community and the impact the donor has rather than focus on the Foundation.
In short – Aoraki Foundation would not exist without us all. It is about people coming together to make our community a special place to live.

The recent Public Meeting gave the Aoraki Foundation an opportunity to publically announce those groups that were successful in receiving funds in the first round of grants from the newly established Health Endowment Fund.
Ron Luxton, Chairman of the South Canterbury Health Endowment Fund announced all successful applicants, explaining the purpose for which their  grant was made.
For a list of successful applicants go to March 2016 SC Health Endowment Fund Grants .
It is hoped that not only will the South Canterbury Health Services community benefit from another channel of funds but that this fund will give people the option to put money back into our local health system that has helped care for them, their families and will continue to do so for their next generations.

Around New Zealand there are 14 Community Foundations . The following story from the Hawkes Bay Community Foundation is a wonderful example on how you or your organisation can make a significant difference to your community.

Mackersey Family Trust Donation to Hawkes Bay Foundation
David Mackersey ( Mackersey Construction) and his family love their home, and the opportunities they've been able to build on. In 2015 the Mackersey Family Trust donated $50,000 to Hawke's Bay Foundation, as part of an ongoing commitment of $250,000 over the next 5 years.
The family had always given to a range of causes in the region, but they liked what they saw with the Hawke's Bay Foundation. David Mackersey said " the concept of community foundations is great, with the idea of building up an asset that will serve multiple generations".
"It's been a simple, straightfoward process to donate to Hawke's bay Foundation, and we look forward to seeing it continue to grow as other people get on board and support Hawke's Bay through the Foundation"
