National Workshop

The first TIS national workshop was held in Adelaide 11-12 May 2016 at the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. 

The workshop was opened by Kuarna Elder, Stephen Goldsmith then followed on by long term advocate for the TIS programme, Professor Tom Calma AO.  This really set the scene for such a wonderful range of speakers who provided participants with resources, information and ideas.  But it was also a great opportunity for networking and peer support amongst the groups.

The following points summarise the key take home messages for the NBPU TIS from the two days: 

• Sessions about performance indicators and the national evaluation were of particular interest to participating organisations
• Organisations are at different stages in the TIS journey, so NBPU TIS’ tailored approach to supporting them is appreciated
• Ongoing recognition of the importance of Professor Tom Calma’s input as National Coordinator TIS
• Organisations are looking for opportunities for developing their workforce, for example to improve referral pathways and clinical staff’s  knowledge and practice
• NBPU TIS will take a more formal approach to providing information to CEOs rather than relying on newsletters
• At future workshops, there should be more interactive sessions and greater attention paid to venue qualities such as seating, lighting and projection

 

World No Tobacco Day

Today is World No Tobacco Day!

World No Tobacco Day is an initiative run by the World Health Organization (WHO). The aim of this event is to inform the public about the dangers of using tobacco and aims to educate people about fighting the global tobacco epidemic.

Key facts from WHO

• Tobacco kills up to half of its users.
• Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
• Nearly 80% of the world's 1 billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries.
