MEDEA
PATRONS' EVENT

Often re-told and re-imagined, the classic Medea myth appears time and time again with its fascinating examination of marriage, betrayal and maternal love. In a tragic tale of revenge, Medea takes the lives of her children when their father leaves her for another woman.

We aren't particularly well known for staging classical texts at Silo, but this one we believe, is radically contemporary. Written by two of the most in-demand dramatists in Australia, this MEDEA focusses on the other side of the story - the previously unheard perspective of the children.

We're working with two revolving casts of young actors, and are lucky to have Rachel House in the director's chair. Last working with us as director on the Auckland Arts' Festival hit HUI,
Rachel is an award-winning director and actor and is especially well known in the industry for her work with children. She can be seen on screen at the moment in the latest Taika Waititi hit, Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

We're very pleased to be kicking off our programme of international premieres this year with this tender, exquisitely rendered play, and hope you can join us for this season's patrons' event. Make sure you join us by 6.30PM to hear an update on all things Silo from Artistic Director Sophie Roberts and Executive Director Jessica Smith.

MEDEA

KATE MULVANY & ANNE-LOUISE SARKS
AFTER EURIPIDES

This is MEDEA, but not as we know it.

Onstage, a typical kid’s bedroom. Two brothers play, bicker and wonder under the watchful gaze of goldfish Cornelius, Hector the teddy bear and a carpet of stars on their bedroom ceiling.

Offstage rages the fateful duel that has been retold for thousands of years. Medea’s back is against the wall and she’s about to draw her sons into the story.

Created by Australian theatre-makers Kate Mulvany and Anne-Louise Sarks, the award- winning MEDEA offers an astonishing retelling of Euripides’ classic, focussing on two perspectives that weren’t heard the first time around. This is a joyful and achingly tender observation of childhood, and a reminder of our responsibility to those most vulnerable.

In a first for Silo, the cast of MEDEA will be led by kids.

DIRECTION Rachel House
DESIGN John Verryt, Kristin Seth, Leon Radojkovic & Philip Dexter

ACT WELL YOUR PART

MEDEA CO-WRITER KATE MULVANY ON LOVE (OR, HOW TO COME TOGETHER IN A TIME OF CRISIS)

"You see, I see this thing called 'the arts' not as an industry so much, but as a house. A big rambling, knockabout house worthy of a Winton staging. Its paint is peeling, the floorboards are splintered, but its foundations are good. Strong. Resilient."

One half of the writing duo behind MEDEA, Kate Mulvany has delivered a formidable Philip Parsons Memorial Lecture at Belvoir St Theatre last week, calling on greater care and support between all parts of the arts industry, particularly in the wake of crippling funding cuts.

We think it's got a lot worth listening to, both for theatre lovers and practitioners alike, and easily carries over the Tasman and beyond.
