Read: John 14:15-26
I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth. (vv. 16-17)
As Christians we believe in God the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, the “Helper” (ESV), the “Counselor” (RSV), the “Comforter” (KJV). When Jesus was saying good-bye to his disciples, he promised them “another Helper,” to be present with them forever, and in them (vv. 16-17). The indwelling-renewing Spirit, who was poured out on the day of Pentecost to build up Christ’s church, helps all believers to increasingly love and obey Jesus as Lord; to sense the living, comforting presence of Jesus at home in their hearts; and to truly understand, apply, and remember his Word.
Mr. and Mrs. Grant are friends who bring joy to persons in need. The Grants are prayerful, Bible-reading Christians, who believe in the Holy Spirit and are open to his leading, so that they show up in the right places at the right times. They assist Christ’s church, doing humble things like serving meals and cleaning up afterwards. You can observe the Spirit’s fruit in their lives. They exemplify what it means to be filled with the Spirit. Theirs is a lifestyle of letting him act through them, in love, kindness, goodness, and gentleness. The needs of others are their priority. People don’t hesitate to call them for help even for little things, because their attitude is, “That’s what I’m here for.”
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank you for Christian friends who help and comfort us.
