From the Headmaster

The Year Four children have been a little weary today. Spending two nights under canvas with your friends may be the reason behind this! In all honesty, I have heard nothing but positivity about the few days they have had at ‘Bushcraft’, where sleeping under canvas, cooking over open fires and shelter- building are the order of the day. The trip is designed to enhance social and personal development, whilst having fun and learning new skills. My understanding from the feedback I have received, is that this has been achieved in abundance. I’m sure staff and children will sleep well tonight!

I spoke to the children in assembly this morning and I asked them to do the following things over the half term break:
-    ride your bike
-    read a book
-    laugh until your tummy hurts
-    go outside and play
-    go for a swim or walk
-    rest
-    see friends and spend time with your loved ones
-    cook or make something
-    eat some ice cream !

I hope they get the opportunity to do many of these things!

Have a wonderful half term break

Egyptian Adventures

Year Three had a very enjoyable day as they entered the world of The Ancient Egyptians at The Ashmolean Museum. The following quotes are taken from the children as they related their Egyptian Adventures.

“We looked at real artefacts that the Ancient Egyptians actually used over 2,000 years ago.”

“We saw real Egyptian combs, sewing needles, jewellery, mirrors, pots and pans and we even saw a copper colander that looks just like the ones we use to drain our vegetables today.”

“There were tools, a wheel, mummies, canopic jars and so much more to see, and every single thing thousands of years old!”

“Did you know they even mummified their favourite animals? We saw a mummified cat and bird and there was even a mummified baby crocodile!”

“There were some children’s games that also looked very similar to some of our games, one looked like Marble Solitaire and another just like Snakes and Ladders!”

“We have been painting cartouches in Art and we saw lots at The Ashmolean as well as real mummies and a sarcophagus, all covered with colourful hieroglyphics.”

“I loved how the guides helped us understand more about the special things used by The Ancient Egyptians. They had some cool artefacts made out of a special glaze called Faience which we are going to make in our Art lessons.”

“The Ashmolean Museum is an amazing place to visit if you like exploring History.”

Bakers in the Making !

The Skills Test
On Friday 18 May, Year Five started their Great Grange Bake Off. We started the skills test after assembly on Friday, most people used their designs and their recipes to help them . On Friday we were told to research a bread recipe that we would make on Monday, so, we all found recipes from around the world. Some people practiced making their dough and the shape they would make it into, then we weighed out the ingredients for the dough. When we brought it in on Monday we were all excited, so we washed our hands and started the bread. We let it prove throughout break and then shaped it after break. After lunch Miss Singleton and Mrs Beardmore spent the afternoon cooking approximately 60 different breads!

The Signature Bake
Year Five took part in the signature bake. This was where we each had to bake some dough to turn into bread. We could bake whatever bread we wanted, and shape it in any way we liked.
At the weekend, we got together all of our ingredients and a recipe ready. On Monday, we baked our bread. We used all sorts of bread baking techniques like proving and kneading to bake our dough. There was a variety of bread baked, including flatbreads, breads with yeast, and even chocolate breads and pain au chocolat! After we made our dough, we shaped it. We then took our dough and left it to prove. Next, we took our dough to the ovens in the French room, where we left them to bake. My bread was a small roll covered in cheese, and it was very tasty. The Signature Bake was really fun and I really enjoyed it.

Rainforest Creatures

The sun shone for the Year Two trip to Bristol Zoo on Tuesday. Not quite as hot as the rainforest, but we were certainly treated to a wide range of indigenous rainforest creatures. During the morning, the children took part in a rainforest workshop and were lucky enough to hold cockroaches,  meet a boa constrictor and stroke a tenrek (which looks like a hedgehog, but is actually closely related to an elephant!).

After an enjoyable picnic lunch on the lawn in the glorious sunshine, we spent the afternoon exploring the zoo. Shrieks of delight could be heard as the children came across lemurs, tamarins, penguins, otters and tapir, to name but a few. However, a highlight of the day was ‘Gorilla Island’ where the children met a magnificent silver  back gorilla watching over his youngsters. It was fascinating to observe the young gorillas energetically playing and gambolling.

The children returned to school enthused and keen to continue finding out about the rainforest and its inhabitants; but also the dangers the rainforest faces.

Victorian Days
Year One enjoyed their Victorian school and wash day on Tuesday. All of the children looked fantastic in their costumes and they really enjoyed playing the different roles throughout the day.

The morning began with a fingernail inspection on the playground, this was very disappointing. However, the children redeemed themselves with a healthy and Godly 10 minute workout. It’s important that these children grow up to be strong in order to work in the mines and factories!

The Victorian classroom was a strict and disciplined environment. Unfortunately, some children laughed so they were suitably punished with the cane and with the dunce’s hat. “Luckily Sir was a bad hitter” wrote one child, “he hit the table instead!” They wrote their cursive alphabet, chanted their times tables and learnt the rhyme;

“Good, better, best
Never let it rest
Till your good is best
And your better best”

Life as a Victorian servant, we unanimously decided, was very hard work despite being lots of fun for one day.  Under the instruction and watchful eyes of the House-Keeper, the children were interviewed to be servants in the ‘Big House’ for the Lord and Lady.

The children had to show their skills by carrying out numerous activities to the highest of standards.  Each child had to beat the rug, iron and fold the tablecloth, polish their shoes until they could see their face in the shiny toes and complete the washing task.

This was perhaps the most entertaining of all.  First the children had to grate their own carbolic soap - it was too expensive to use the whole bar!!  Then they had to scrub the clothes on the washboard and then rinse off the soap-suds using the dolly, this was very strenuous!!  Unfortunately we didn’t have a mangle so we had to wring out the clothes before hanging them on the line to dry.

Sir and Ma'am would like to congratulate all the children for their enthusiasm, empathy and hard work throughout the whole Victorian experience.  A big thank-you also to the parents for providing such lovely costumes - the children looked amazing!

Annual Aquathlon

On Saturday 21 May four boys and four girls from Years Five & Six travelled to Malvern College for The Downs annual Aquathlon. The girls and boys were divided into teams of 4, however they had to run and swim against the clock in order to try and be the fastest U11 boy or girl overall. With 10 schools and over 100 children in attendance the competition was fierce and the atmosphere buzzing.

Having neatly laid all their kit out in our designated area and put talcum powder in their trainers, it was time to make their way into the changing rooms. They had to swim four lengths of the pool before getting out and sprinting to the transition box to quickly put on their trainers and tops whilst the on-looking adults restrained themselves from shouting “faster faster!” (One parent, who shall not be named, was even seen hiding behind a tree during their daughter’s transition!) Once their t-shirts were over their heads they could then start the 800m run around the cricket pitches before crossing the finish line to the cheers of their encouraging friends and family.

Both teams swam and ran fantastically well and a couple even won their heats. There were some very slick transitions this year so well done to you all! We were also very fortunate that Jodie Ruane (Year Seven at RGS Worcester) was allowed to attend and compete in the U13 event, which she then went on to win. She also won the U11 competition last year. Well done to all who took part in a very competitive and enjoyable event!

Athletics Success

Congratulations to all athletes who took part in the RGS The Grange athletics meet on Friday. As always this was a great and fun event competing against Winterfold, King's Hawford and King's St Alban's in a range of running events.

All children ran brilliantly, both working hard in their races and then supporting one another with a real team ethic.

With RGS The Grange pupils winning each race and breaking 5 of the 12 records was quite remarkable. Well done to each and everyone of them.

I'm already looking forward to sports day! Thanks also to the super parent support on the side and importantly the staff for ensuring it all ran very smoothly.

Summer Health Update
As the sun has finally decided to shine please could we remind parents of our Golden Summer Rules

1.  Please ensure you apply once a day suncream to your child before they come to school. Our policy states that if your child needs to re-apply suncream during the day they should do this themselves from a named suncream bottle.

2.  Please ensure your child has a sun hat in school at all times - preferably school regulation.

3.  Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school at all times.  We are aware that some children are not drinking enough.  Squash and flavoured waters are not permitted in case they are spilt.

4.  If your child suffers from hayfever please could they take an antihistamine tablet before coming to school. The school nurse recommends Piriteze as this should last all day.
Many thanks.
