You Mean the World to Us

You guys, you rocked Ride-A-Bike this year. We had more paid riders than we've had in years, and we raised more than $50,000 to fund those services that make ADEC truly stand out.

Because of you, our summer campers can enjoy more recreational and music therapy time, not just maintaining their progress from the school year but growing more every day. Because of you, our guardianship clients have advocates and resources to help them make positive decisions and enjoy life to the fullest. Because of you, ADEC can go beyond the expected and offer services tailored for choice and possibility.

Thank you.

If you came out to ride - thank you. If you generously decided to support us with a pledge - thank you. If you volunteered - thank you. Any time that you took out of your day to spend time with us means the world to the people we serve. We are so overwhelmingly grateful for our community. And we just can't say it enough. Thank you.

If you would like to share The Open Door with your friends, family members or the loved ones of the people we serve, share this link. As always, please contact me with any stories or news you would like to see shared here. This is your Open Door.

The Bristol campus has been undergoing some exciting changes lately! We have new spaces and activities happening at Bristol Day, and we'll soon have a new sign making our campus more accessible to visitors. Read more about these changes and what they mean for the people we serve by clicking here.

Ride-A-Bike 2016 was a roaring success for ADEC. We had a blast. R2-D2 and llamas came out to make it even more special this year. The best part of all was raising more than $50,000 to continue to make ADEC services above and beyond the expected. Read more about our record-breaking year by clicking here.

We want to celebrate your life events and accomplishment and stand with you during the tough times. Please e-mail Whitney Craig with any weddings, births, deaths, serious illnesses or personal successes you would like to share with fellow ADEC staff members.

ADEC welcomed nine energetic new staff members this week. Please give a warm welcome to each person when you see her around ADEC.

ADEC Welcomes Michelle Sokol

Michelle Sokol is Mission Advancement Team's newest member. As ADEC's Media Communications Specialist, Michelle will be responsible for our external communications - writing press releases, monitoring social media and fostering our relationships with local media outlets. Michelle comes to ADEC from the Elkhart Truth, where she worked as the education reporter. You can read her recent blog post about making the transition here. Prior to that post, she worked for papers in Kentucky and Columbus, IN. An Indiana University graduate, Michelle lives in Goshen with her husband, Travis, and their two dogs. In her spare time, she enjoys riding her bike and spending time at the lake. When asked what she's most excited about in her new position at ADEC, Michelle said, "Just getting to know all the clients and staff that are part of ADEC."

Of course, we asked Michelle what superhero she would be if she could and she said . . . Superman! "I would really like to fly." Welcome aboard, Michelle! We think you'll soar in your new role.

IU Grant Results in Four AED Devices

ADEC received four AED devices in the mail this week, thanks to a generous grant from IU Goshen Health. We are proud to partner with IU Goshen each year on a health initiative for our clients and the greater Elkhart community. These devices will be placed at ADEC locations throughout the county to ensure the proper tools are available in the event of a medical emergency. Signs will be posted to alert the public of our devices should someone have a need. Thank you, IU Goshen for your generous support!

The ADEC Wellness Campaign continues this quarter as Human Resources works to put together a virtual healthy-eating cookbook using employee submissions. Do you have a healthy recipe you love? Send it to Laura Zalas. The full book will be available in June. Each week until then, we'll feature a staff submission to whet your appetite.
