Reframing Human Services Assembly Communication Tip: Match the Solution to the Problem

While organizations often feel pressured to start by “defining the problem,” inundating communications with challenges and crisis language typically triggers fatalism—a belief that the problem we are highlighting is too big to solve. And if it’s too big to solve, then there is no sense in reading or thinking further about the issue. Instead, be sure to place challenges within the context of the full narrative, leading with the value of human potential, and ensuring the size of the solution matches the scope of the challenge. This will build the public’s sense that the policies, services, or programs that are promoted should be prioritized because they are important and because they work.  For an example of this tip in action click here

We Want to Hear from You

Mobility Bond

Mayor Adler's Office is proposing a $720 million mobility bond through a 2-cent tax hike to fund programs to address mobility in Austin in ways that they state will also provide a maximum benefit to affordability. The proposal includes $300 million for mobility projects (listed below) using the City’s current debt tax rate, and a 2 cent tax increase. The Mayor's Office has asked One Voice to consider endorsing a potential mobility bond. Please respond to this very brief survey (3 questions, should take less than 3 minutes) to provide your input on whether One Voice should endorse a potential mobility bond that proposes no tax increase, a 1 cent increase, or 2 cent increase by noon on Wednesday, June 1st. The Executive Committee is meeting next Thursday, June 2nd, and they really need member guidance and feedback on whether One Voice should take a position on this. The following is a list of the programs being proposed by the Mayor's Office through a mobility bond:
  • Transportation infrastructure to support denser development along targeted corridors outside of downtown, with improvements for mobility (intersection and signal improvements, bike lanes, sidewalks, etc.) to reduce delays and improve safety for all modes of transportation (50-60% of funding). Initial improvements would be for the following corridors: North Lamar, North Burnet Road, Guadalupe, South Lamar, East MLK/969, East Riverside, Airport Blvd – see project details here
  • Additional improvements to improve mobility and safety along other corridors primarily in northwest, west, and southwest areas of Austin (~25% of funding). Examples include improvements to HWY 360, Brodie Lane, and Parmer Lane.
  • 5% for the Vision Zero Program to reduce traffic related fatalities at the city’s most dangerous intersections.
  • Active transportation infrastructure across the city including sidewalks to schools and transit stops, trails and bike infrastructure (10-15% of funding).

Member News and Requests

Reminder to Respond ASAP: Request from OVCT Members ECHO and Lifeworks for Homeless Youth Count

Travis County has been chosen as one of the 22 communities across the country to participate in an innovative policy research effort called the Voices of Youth Count  (VoYC) initiative. The initiative, launched by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, is designed to link evidence and action by capturing the experiences of unaccompanied homeless and runaway youth, more clearly defining the scope of the issue, and driving compelling knowledge into the hands of the broad national community dedicated to ending youth homelessness.

LifeWorks and ECHO are co-leading the local youth count on June 7th, 2016 and are requesting participation from nonprofits within Travis County who connect with youth (14-25) who are unaccompanied and either unstably housed and/or literally homeless. They are requesting answers to the three questions below:
  • Does your organization serve any unstably housed youth (14-25)?
  • How can those youth best be reached during the count on June 7th?
  • Does your organization have any youth who might be interested in participating in the count as a volunteer (18-25 y/o)?
If you serve this population and have not yet been contacted about the Voices of Youth Count participation, please contact Niki Paul, Director of Operations, ECHO at nikipaul@austinecho.org or 512-571-3945.

One Voice Member CareBox Program Featured in Austin American Statesman

This year, One Voice Member, CareBox Program won $12,000 in the Philanthropitch nonprofit fast-pitch competition. It also earned admission into Mission Accelerator, a five-month business boot camp for nonprofits that will help it create a business model toward that expansion. The group combines crowd-funding with its registry of items that cancer patients need. On the group’s website, a donor can scroll through a patient’s curated list of items and give toward paying for some of those items. The group hopes to serve 500 patients this year and expand beyond Central Texas into Houston and Dallas.
