Baylor: Truett Seminary Professor Garland named Interim Prez: "The actions being taken in response to the findings of the Pepper Hamilton investigation, we hope, will help our community heal, communicate our concern for those impacted by interpersonal violence and reaffirm that Baylor is resolutely committed to its foundational Christian mission." (link); In a new piece from CBSSports.com's Dodd: "A source told CBS Sports said that neither NCAA enforcement nor the law firm believe there are traditional NCAA infractions in play at Baylor. However, there may be some extra benefits violations to be considered if Baylor players accused of sexual assault did not go through the school's traditional disciplinary process applied to students." (link); Fox Sports columnist Mandel: "NCAA might not sanction Baylor after what happened in Penn State case" (link); ESPN's Olson looks back on comments by former FB HC Briles on his building of the program, including, "I think we do a good job of nurturing and giving these guys a chance to get their feet on the ground and start over. We're very nonjudgmental...I've always thought the best of people until they prove me wrong." More (link); It seems so secondary, but there's plenty of conversation already circulating on who could be the Bears next HC (link); Big 12 Commish Bowlsby talked a bit about the situation on Thursday, "I do think that when one of our schools has problems, it reflects on all of our schools. From that standpoint, I think there's certainly plenty to think about." More (link).
As you likely know, Ole Miss released its Notice of Allegations yesterday & it included 28 violations, 16 of which were of the Level I variety. Arguably the most startling was the report of former FB staffers pushing for fraudulently-raised ACT scores to get prospective student-athletes eligible. Impermissible benefits & other academic issues were found in not just FB, but also WBB. Nine of the 13 allegations for FB occurred under current HC Freeze's tenure. Chancellor Vitter & AD Bjork via a joint statement, "We agree that a violation of NCAA rules occurred. However, for several of those allegations we do not agree on all of the facts. For five of those 27 violations, we believe the violation should be classified (as a lower-level violation)." The Rebels have already self-imposed some penalties & will continue to investigate other situations, like the developments around former FB student-athlete & Miami Dolphins draftee Tunsil. ACC tax returns from 2014-15 include an average distribution to league members of $26.2M, Commish Swofford earned $2.7M, which was up $600K year over year & ranked him third among 'Power 5' bosses. The league also paid Wasserman Media Group $625K during the reporting period for its help around the potential build of an ACC Network & $2.2M overall in legal fees with Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP in Greensboro getting $1.75M. Overall, 'Power 5' leagues did $2.1B in revenue in 14-15, a 33% increase from 13-14. More. - link
Seattle Times columnist Stone, "UW’s new athletic director Jennifer Cohen has vision, charisma, but now comes the hard part." Stone argues that while the optics of Cohen's hire at Washington were outstanding, figuring her way through a nearly $1M budget deficit is one real measure of if she has the chops for the top spot. Setting & executing a vision for the Huskies is another key task. Cohen noted how that was central to her message during the interview process, "What I tried to do in the interview process was just demonstrate my vision for this place, and some ideas about a plan, and my knowledge and passion for it." - link
Tennessee AD Hart previews upcoming SEC meetings, expects satellite FB camps to get its fair share of review, calls time demands on student-athletes "the biggest challenge," notes how the topic cannot be solved with a "one size fits all approach." MBB scheduling & FB instant replay will also get covered as will the future site of the league's Baseball Tourney, "There are some great venues in the mix, and we could play our tournament at any one of four or five venues and have a great experience. That’s what’ll make this a very difficult decision." - link
Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito continues his series on what North Texas needs in a new AD, this segment focuses on expanding the fan & donor bases for the Mean Green. FB, MBB & WBB have all struggled at the gate in connection to sub-par competitive results. A study from the University of Houston found UNT produced the smallest amount of all the state's DI schools on the annual giving front as $800K trailed next-lowest Texas State by $550K. A bit more. - link
UNLV FB gets an anonymous $2M gift that leadership describes as a "game changer." HC Sanchez says the donor is a "football guy" & a longtime Rebels supporter, stops short of indicating the money will go toward new on-campus facilities for his program. AD Kunzer-Murphy: "A tremendous gift such as this is further evidence that the UNLV football program is on the rise." Prez Jessup with very similar thoughts: "This gift is yet another example of the program’s continued positive momentum under coach Sanchez’s leadership." - link
Harvard Business Review Corner: "A Manager’s Job Is Making Sure Employees Have a Life Outside Work." Thesis from 500Startups Entrepreneur in Residence Dev Arora & marketing leader Frey: "We are convinced that a team characterized by trust, respect and admiration, working 40-hour work weeks, will outperform a similarly competent team characterized by fear, mistrust and scarcity thinking, frantically 'being productive' 80 hours per week. The statistical evidence overwhelmingly supports that more than 50 hours per week leads to diminished returns. Fear is not the same as respect, and kindness is not the inverse of competence. People who believe their work truly benefits others and who are treated with respect in the workplace simply produce better results." - link

Interesting perspective on how long check-in lines at airports could actually lead to lower fares, namesake Frommer's editorial director on the plan by United & American to spend $4M to help improve the TSA situation, "If American Airlines is going to spend $4 million of its own money, obviously the airlines are nervous about not being able to sell last-minute seats. I wonder if this rash of bad publicity won't make getting a last-minute booking more affordable." Overall, the average round trip ticket in 2015 was at its lowest mark since 2010 & general sentiment is that even with continuing low fuel costs, there's no where for prices to go but up. - link

The other two finalists are Northwest Oklahoma State (DII) AD Carter, who has also served as AD at Armstrong Atlantic (DII), Newberry (DII) & Missouri Baptist (NAIA), as well as Minnesota State (DII) Asst. Hocutt: "Jonathan’s vision and financial acumen stood out during his interview and throughout the selection process. We are excited to have him join our executive team." Botros has been at his alma mater for eight years. - link
$348,553 was the cost of Michigan FB's spring break trip to the IMG Academy in Bradenton. $146,912 went toward lodging, $107,148 for flights, $51,395 for ground travel, $39,519 for meals & per diem. Additional expenses deemed as "other" totaled $3,580. Commercial flights, along with some staffers driving were cost conscious moves. - link
Days after speculation on the topic, Rutgers will play a FB game at Yankee Stadium as a match-up with Maryland is on the docket for 2017 as the Scarlet Knights will move a home game to NYC according to sources. The linked NJ.com piece says the deal was actually inked two years ago by former AD Hermann. AD Hobbs on the report: "There were discussions by the previous administration with the Yankees and an agreement in principle was reached. I'm reviewing those terms and we'll announce our intention in due course." - link
One MBB program which has leveraged the transfer market in the sport is Nevada as nine of HC Musselman's 14 commitments in his 14 months on the job, nine have been student-athletes moving from another institution. Musselman's 2016-17 team will feature transfers from Missouri State, Southern Illinois & Brown, while he'll also have student-athletes sitting & ready for 2017-18 from NC State. Reno Gazette-Journal's Murray believe transfers can be a good strategy as more MBB programs effectively only use 10 of their 13 scholarships every year. - link
Over the last two days in our 1.Question space, Portland Business Journal's Kish reviewed the impact of the UCLA-Under Armour deal on the greater industry & here's another opinion, this one from Footwear News analyst Butler-Young who talked to NPD Group shoe expert Powell. "I have trouble justifying any of these deals in terms of a return on sales — there just isn’t enough merchandise being sold. Instead, they must be viewed as a marketing spend. Under Armour’s logo is going to be in every video, on every photo, on every UCLA athlete — every time they are seen. There is absolutely a value to that kind of exposure." - link

Review from SportTechie on why the NFL is pushing harder on digital as the league launched its own YouTube channel last year & of course recently signed a deal with Twitter for Thursday night streaming rights. The YouTube execution will also feature notable full-length games from past seasons starting this year. SportTechie holds the view that more live games will eventually make it on to YT, which is a bit different than how SportsBusiness Journal's Ourand sees the situation in comments with SI's Deitsch in a pod earlier this week. - link, link

Big 12 expansion talk doesn't sleep: Salt Lake Tribune's Drew, "BYU maintaining low public profile as Big 12 meetings approach." But, AD Holmoe said at a booster function earlier this week he is "deeply involved" in getting the Cougars message in front of Big 12 leadership. (link); Cincinnati.com & Hookem.com take a look at how Cincinnati would fit within the league, capacity of Nippert Stadium & the state of other facilities could be a challenge for the Bearcats, but they are the closest option to West Virginia if the Mountaineers are pushing hard for a partner (link, link); Hookem.com's Bohls also continues the narrative on Houston as AD Yurachek comments: "The value of the University of Houston in my eyes, first and foremost, is the Houston TV market." More (link).
During Big 12 meetings next week, league FARs will discuss an existing rule that penalizes a student-athlete one year of eligibility for transferring within the conference. The issue is a particularly hot topic as it could directly impact Oklahoma stand-out student-athlete Mayfield, who transferred from Texas Tech to OU after his freshman year. Mayfield's family argues the rule shouldn't apply to him, as he was a walk-on at TTU. OU AD Castiglione thinks a rule modification siding with walk-ons "definitely should pass." Big 12 Commish Bowlsby: "I think we all ought to be a little bit thoughtful about it. Absent Baker Mayfield getting relief, he'll have a year of eligibility left and won't be able to use it in our conference but instead would go someplace else and use it. That might not be in anybody's best interest." - link
Hawai'i set to increase student athletics fees from $50 to $100 by 2020, as part of a $14.2M increase in annual revenue over the next four years. The inevitable pushback from student groups is already under way, forcing the athletic department to further justify the move. Special Asst. to the AD, Matsunaga, points out that UH's fees are the lowest in peer conferences. A department report shows a $1,644 value in return for the annual $100 fee. - link
San Diego State MBB season-ticket renewal rate for the 12,414-seat Viejas Arena currently stands at a whopping 96%. With 827 people on the wait list, Executive Assoc. AD Schnall should have no problem unloading the remaining 200 tickets: "It still continues to amaze and impress me that we get the renewal rates we do. I think 96 percent is spectacular. There are probably a few programs that have a similar status, but it’s pretty unique for college basketball or football." - link
The New York Times with a long look at the drop in pay for the top 200 CEOs at American companies. The 2015 average ($19.3M) dipped 15% from the year prior's average of $22.6M. Cash and stock awards fell in value as well. To some extent, compensation packages are linked to market performances & since both the S&P & Dow Jones fell in 2015, so did the average package which consists of 69% stock. Tech and media CEOs accounted for 17 of the top-30 salaries last year. Lots more. - link
Also noticed: Southern Miss AD McGillis appointed to the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee for a four-year term, effective September 1 (link); St. Bonaventure AD Kenney selects Bowling Green Assoc. HC Fleming as WBB HC. Fleming previously spent 11 years at SBU, working his way up fro student manager to assistant coach. (link); In July, WWE will move SmackDown from Thursday to Tuesday nights & the show will air live. The move also means the return of the brand split, putting stars on either RAW or Smackdown exclusively, determined by Roster Draft. WWE Chairman McMahon: "WWE’s flagship programs will both leverage the incredible depth of our talent roster, distinct storylines and the unpredictable nature of live TV. This move will undoubtedly build more excitement and deepen engagement with our fans around the world." While WWE may not be 'sports' it most certainly wins market share from sports fans around the globe (link).
