Alberta Inspires: The AFA Celebrates 25 Years!

25 years ago, the AFA and the arts community in Alberta embarked on a creative partnership in inspiration. It has always been the AFA’s purpose to foster and cultivate this relationship by supporting local artists and art organizations to develop their practice in their communities. Our Alberta art is unique. It is a part of our cultural identity. It emanates throughout our province and beyond our borders. Alberta inspires.

On September 6, 2016, the AFA will mark its 25th anniversary, and we want to showcase the past, present and future of Alberta art and artistic practice. This milestone belongs to Alberta's arts community as much as it does to the AFA, so let's celebrate together!

25 Influential Alberta Artists: Only 23 Days Left to Nominate an Artist!

To begin, we are seeking your nominations to identify 25 Albertan artists who have made significant impacts to the development and evolution of our province’s arts community over the past 25 years. We want to recognize artists who have inspired your practice – Artists who mean something special to your community. Chances are, if they have inspired you, they have inspired others. Let’s give these artists the recognition they deserve.

We are collecting artist nominations until June 30, 2016. We will announce the final selection of artists during Culture Days in September 2016. Please share widely!

The History of the AFA

Between now and September 2016, we will share interesting and fun stories from the AFA's 25 year history by publishing a new story on our website every week! The first two posts are AFA Origins and The History of the AFA Art Collection. We'll also be sharing these stories through our social media, so be sure to subscribe/like/follow us on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram to catch the latest story.

But wait, there's more!

We have a number of programs and projects that we plan to announce in the coming weeks. Be sure to check http://affta.ab.ca/AFA25 often... we can't wait to celebrate with you!

The Culture Satellite Account Measures Economic Impact of Arts and Culture

Culture is everywhere. It is the books we read, the movies we watch, the events we attend and so much more. It is easy to see the value of culture in our own lives but did you know that culture is also economically significant?

On May 11, Statistics Canada released Culture Satellite Account (CSA) economic data for the Canadian arts, culture and sport sectors from 2010 – 2014, through the first ever Provincial and Territorial Culture Indicators report. Alberta’s arts community makes important contributions to the overall economic impact of the province’s culture sector. See the full story here.
