Marigold Santos
MIRROR/MOTHER (fragments)
Marigold Santos | night watch / white wood | acrylic on linen | 30" x 30" | 2016
May 27 - July 6 2016

MIRROR/MOTHER (fragments) explores self-hood as an experience of shifting identities and realities. Works of drawing, film and installation renegotiate the artist's lived experience of migration and movement between cultures and tradition into meaningful fragments of personal myth, narrative and folklore. In MIRROR/MOTHER (fragments) Santos furthers her investigation of colonial narrative, visibility, and empowerment alive with fantastical and otherworldly imagery. The artist draws on material and evolving ideas from two previous bodies of work: BLACK MIRROR, a series focusing on dualities and binaries and INVISIBLE MOTHER, a series of work challenging conceptual roles of light and dark through portrayals of women in folklore and beyond. MIRROR/MOTHER (fragments) re-combines these histories and ideas and speaks to multifariousness by providing new paths by which to follow and deviate.

Marigold Santos pursues an inter-disciplinary art practice involving drawn, painted, and printed works, sculpture, animation, and sound. She holds a BFA with Honours from the University of Calgary (2007), and an MFA from Concordia University in Montréal (2011). As a recipient of numerous awards and grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, she exhibits widely across Canada, and divides her place of residence and practice between Calgary and Montreal.

MIRROR/MOTHER (fragments) features an original essay by Toronto-based scholar,
educator and artist Marissa Largo entitled Supernatural Entanglements and the Politics of Visibility. Commissioned by Eastern Edge Gallery.

Marissa Largo is an educator, artist, and PhD candidate in the Department of Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Anuta Skrypnychenko
The Mermaids Project
Anuta Skrypnychenko | Blue Mermaid | ceramics, stoneware clay, glazed | 2015

May 27 - June 11 2016

The Mermaids Project is an ongoing series of ceramics that explore our dichotomous relationship to the ocean through the mythical figure of the mermaid. In this work, Skrypnychenko re-figures the ancient archetype as a present-day protector of her domain. Disturbed by political conflicts at sea and poisoned by offshore mining for oil and minerals, the enigmatic and beautiful figure is provoked to become a warrior.

Myths about the hybrid of woman and fish exist in many cultures. Mermaids are fascinating and dangerous, beautiful and monstrous. How might their mystery and meaning shift as we move towards the ability to map every inch of the ocean floor? Skrypnychenko's figures pose questions about how we find space for myth in our lives, and honour the ocean as a powerful unknown.

Anuta Skrypnychenko lives in Toronto where she is pursuing a post-graduate degree in Design Strategy at the Institute without Boundaries (IwB). The focus of her work and studies at the IwB is Iveragh Peninsula, a coastal region in Ireland located in County Kerry. Currently she is working on a system of walking, cycling and paddling maps and a guidebook for the Skellig Kerry Ways and Iveragh Peninsula.

Originally from Kyiv, Ukraine,Skrypnychenko moved to Canada in 2004. She holds a Bachelor's of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph (2010). She has exhibited work at the Art Metropole, XPACE, Gallery 44, AGO, Cambridge Galleries, Toronto Urban Film Festival, Galerie Les Territoires and at the Museum of Photography Thessaloniki.

St. John's Art Space Forum

Wednesday, June 15 6-9 pm
Foran Room St. John's City Hall

Calling all artists!

There are several projects coming soon to St. John's that are aimed at providing rehearsal, studio, and performance space to artists. The new home of the St. John's Farmers' Market will have significant amounts of rental space available, as will the Cochrane Community Outreach and Performance Centre, which is transforming the annex building at Cochrane St. United Church into a mix of supportive housing, flexible space, and rental studios.

Happy City will be helping facilitate a joint meeting for these two organizations, who both want to hear from the local arts community about how to make the best use of these exciting spaces!

Come hear a bit about the projects, and tell the organizers what you'd like to see happen, what you'd need from a space, and how much would be a fair price to charge for it.

Call for Proposals: 2017/18 Programming
White Water Gallery, North Bay

White Water Gallery (WWG) is seeking proposals from artists working in all media for the 2017/18 programming season. 2017 is our 40th anniversary, so we especially welcome proposals for work that reflects on or engages with themes, issues, or artistic work from the heyday of social movement activity in the 1970s.

Deadline: June 30, 2016

WWG is dedicated to presenting work by contemporary artists working in or across a variety of disciplines. The gallery strives to present experimental, alternative and/or critically engaged art that is relevant to diverse cultures and "wicked problems." The gallery welcomes submissions from individual artists, curators, and collectives, with new or existing exhibition proposals.

We also encourage initiatives that seek to expand our programming beyond the gallery space, and welcome proposals for site-specific projects.

The Gallery Space

White Water is an open concept gallery with a storefront window right on Main Street.

The exhibition space is about 1000 square feet in total (including the front entry area [20 x 15 = 300 sq ft] and the main area [35 x 20 = 700 sq ft]). The tin ceilings are about 14 feet high, and there is a drywall lip at 10 feet high.

This image was taken from the WWG storefront, during the process of installing the Point of No Return Collective show (2015).

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please select visual support material mindfully, as committee members have limited time to consider each proposal. Images should be labeled numerically with the artist’s name (01_name.jpg, 02_name.jpg, etc.). Your Support Material List should include title of work, date created, medium, and dimensions.

Video documentation should either be uploaded to a site such as Youtube or Vimeo and linked in the application, or included on a USB or DVD. Regardless of duration, please include full videos. Due to time constraints, the selections committee may only view up to 5 minutes of each video. Please note the clip you would prefer the jury view by including time marks in the documentation list.

White Water Gallery will accept mailed submissions, but we prefer those submitted by email to:
programming@whitewatergallery.com

Programming Process

Proposals are judged on artistic merit and project viability, as well as in relation to White Water Gallery’s mandate and programming focus.

All submissions to the Annual Call are vetted by a Programming Committee composed of: the Director, 5 working artists or curators from the region, and 1 invited artist or curator from outside of North Bay. Based on this jury's decisions, and taking budgetary and scheduling constraints into consideration, the Director makes final decisions in selecting each exhibition.

Please allow approximately 3 months after the deadline for the White Water Gallery jury to consider submissions.

NOTE: Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis, and those received after the post-marked deadline will be held over until the next review.

MISSION

Established in 1974 and incorporated in 1977, the White Water Gallery has played a leading role in the promotion and dissemination of contemporary art and culture, both locally and nationally. As a not-for-profit Artist-Run Centre, the Gallery aims to facilitate a diverse range of artistic programming.

Exhibition Fees

The White Water Gallery is considered a Category 1 gallery and is classified as a small space by Canadian Artists Representation Copyright Collective (CARCC). We pay full artist fees in accordance with this designation and the CARCC guidelines. The current fee for a solo exhibition is $1,900, which does not include fees paid for additional activities that may be scheduled such as artist talks, panel discussions, or screenings.
