NOMADS "Love It Or Leave It"

NOMADS "Love It Or Leave It"
12"LP - $11.35
MELOTOV / MLTVR037v

"In translating his life into a band, [Nomads frontman 'Mocaine'] has given LA punk rock an updated version of N.W.A." –LA Weekly

Since their inception, LA's Nomads have offered a particularly harsh brand of hardcore punk. Now the outfit are leveling up with their latest release, Love It or Leave It... The honesty and intentionality of Nomads will hit you in the face like a two by four... It's raw and it's good." –Mass Appeal
Like a hurricane of sound, Nomads flattens all in its path. Whiplash d-beats, steamrolling riffs and wailing solos drive forward with natural disaster intensity, led by frontman Mocaine's raspy ringleading. The band's extreme brand of punk has its roots in Motorhead, Discharge, and Discharge-loving punks of the '80s, like Anti Cimex from Sweden and Gauze from Japan.

But Nomads is an LA band, through and through. They take influence from around the world and bring it home to LA to tell their own nihilistic stories of drugs, violence, cops, and death. As one LA Weekly writer put it, Nomads "has given LA punk rock an updated version of N.W.A." Like N.W.A. and Suicidal Tendencies, Nomads are LA bards giving a voice to the darkness and demons in the City of Angels.

From start to finish, Love It or Leave It is an album of storm-like sonic power and lyrical realness. Mocaine describes the meaning behind the album title: "It's about completely disliking the reality we wake up to everyday. So you want to escape by getting high or dying. Or both."
Nomads was founded in LA in 2011 by ex-members of Product of Waste and Minority Unit. Founding drummer Jorge Herrera also pounds for Despise You and ACxDC.

Post punk. Angular pop. Darker new wave. Experimental goth. Whatever you may call it, Torture Love have been writing great songs that fall somewhere withinin those realms since 2012, including the release of two killer cassette demos. At times somber and grey, and at others driving and destructive, all in all it's pretty hard not to dance while you're listening to this record. THE CHARIOT "Long Live"

THE CHARIOT "Long Live"
12"LP - $13.75
GOOD FIGHT / GOODFIGHT009v

On "Calvin Makenzie," the third track on the Chariot's fourth album, Long Live (all of the song titles are either people's names or abstractions like "The City" and "The Earth"), the typically harrowing hardcore heavy metal track suddenly gives way to a pleasant, sunny pop tune as if the band had been recording over an old tape by somebody else or someone had abruptly changed channels. The metal roar returns, but then disappears again in favor of the sunny pop at the end. Thus does Josh Scogin vary the sound of his spiritual/philosophical onslaught. He also likes to add a wordless choir (at the end of "The City") and cut to an equally unexpected piano interlude ("David De La Hoz"). And he doesn't waste time; like its predecessors, Long Live clocks in at only half an hour. In that time, however, Scogin has discoursed in his howling voice about the state of things as he sees it. There isn't anything specifically religious in his rants, except, perhaps, by implication, in terms of the exhortation to change the world and better one's behavior. When he repeats, "Disappointed, I know you are," many times at the end of "Evan Perks," he may be speaking to his God, but that's not clear. Surely, his followers will not be disappointed that he is continuing to follow his muse, even to the edge of incoherence.

You like the Lemonheads and the Bad Brains at the same time? Of course you do. This is kind of like that, but less heroin involved. “Rock The Fuck On Forever” isn’t just the name of their new LP, it’s a fucking command. If you want nothing more in life than to rock your stupid ass off, then do yourself a favor and pick this shit up straight from POP WIG records. The band also has some other records but this one is way better than that old bull-shit. This record was recorded and produced by Will Yip, who did Title Fight, Citizen, and Circa Survive. I bet he sang on it too or something. He also did the Turnover record that I know you all fuck with. This shit rocks hard as fuck. If you’re still a virgin this record will make you not one.

Hesitation Wounds is the musical collaboration of Jeremy Bolm, Jay Weinberg, Neeraj Kane, and Stephen "Scuba" LaCour. Each brings a unique perspective to the group, with impressive resumes as members of other bands, yet Hesitation Wounds truly feels like the product of four distinct voices coming together to make something wholly and uniquely their own. The band may have a very modest and organic origin - just four friends making the music they love with no preconceptions - but "Awake For Everything" is far from a slapdash vanity project. The record was made with the same passion and care that is the hallmark of this talented quartet and that fire shows in the music they've created together. It’s an album of abrasive and moody hardcore that takes unexpected twists and turns, while always remaining satisfyingly aggressive.

On the second single for their upcoming LP, Rock the Fuck on Forever, Angel Du$t deliver a 120-second blast of pure melody in the blissed out pop gem that is "Upside Down." While Angel Du$t have made a name for themselves with their own off-kilter brand of spastic, high octane adrenaline blasts, they've also showed us that they have quite the knack for a big melody and catchy hook. Guaranteed to get your toe tapping and head bobbing, "Upside Down" is a testament to Angel Du$t's penchant for melody and pop sensibility, and is poised to be the perfect soundtrack for your start to Spring.

CRETINS rear their ugly heads yet again with six new cuts of destructive hardcore punk on "Meat". This is a completely savage recording that harnesses the pure hatred of Poison Idea and depraved genius of Cleveland's finest into one crushing EP. This is not the safe, easygoing, or experimental garbage that has crept into HC punk in recent years. CRETINS' approach here is simple - hard hitting and forceful songwriting with lyrics that espouse a clear distaste for humanity. THE HOTELIER "Goodness"
2x12"LP - $27.50
TINY ENGINES / TINYENG149v

It is not enough to say that The Hotelier have grown older, or wiser, or more of anything. We can trace a progression, if we like, from the explosive empowerment of It Never Goes Out to the ashen disillusionment of Home, Like Noplace Is There. We can follow an awakening of youth in suburbia attempting to learn what is right, and what is ours, and what is possible and impossible, and maybe we can't save each other like we thought we once could. We're awake and we're tired and we want love in our lives again. And so we find ourselves now in Goodness, in the woods outside of the suburbs, trying to re-learn that love.

But we seek a space outside time. Once in a while we can feel it, like a clearing. Where our histories and our rhetorics blend into languages spoken and unspoken. Where the greatest awe comes upon us for the overlooked, the simple, the incomperhensible. Where things glitch as they solidify, repeat as they evolve, scream as they whisper. Where always and forever above us, in all of its natural, unnatural, supernatural love, shines the moon. Goodness is not this place -- goodness is nowhere -- but we are following it to where we have to be.

After all we've gone through, how young are we? What is age softening in us, what is it hardening in us? Are we getting better? Worse? How could we ever know, when capital forces us onward away from ourselves? Will the woods consume the suburbs; will the suburbs consume the woods? In the gaps between these monumental questions, in the tiniest details, in the infinitude of cycles outside of time, there is Goodness. We begin there. - Alyssa Kai

Goodness was engineered/produced by Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, RI during August and September of 2015.

TENEMENT "Blind Wink"
12"LP - $10.00
DERANGED / DERA065v

The repress of Tenement’s second album, The Blind Wink courtesy of Deranged Records. Their first album Napalm Dream was heavy on the high octane catchy punk, and definitely great but The Blink Wink is where the band found their confidence and compiled a very distinct and mixed sounding album’s worth of material. From the Replacements, the Decendents, and the Lemonheads, the influences are obvious and the delivery spot on. I am not sure how a band that is so deeply rooted in hardcore punk ends up creating such a diverse and strong album so early in their ‘career’ but Tenement have managed to comfortably move beyond the confines of the punk song and keep us captivated. “This record is a beautiful oddity.” Razorcake Magazine

TOTAL ABUSE "Excluded"
12"LP - $10.00
DERANGED / DERA278v

The Total Abuse has been a band since 2007. They have released three LPs and two 7"s, and they are considered one of the creators of a rare mixture of the old school hardcore punk sound with 80s industrial / noise aesthetics. Many bands have tried to copy their sound and vibe but no one has been able to emulate the pure hellish intensity of Total Abuse. Excluded is their 4th full length LP and was recorded in Austin,TX at Ohm recording studio and produced by David Williams. After the pure noise sludge mess of Prison Sweat the band decided to take their songs to a different place by focusing on pure riffs. Each song batters the listener down with raging buzz saw guitar riffs and unadulterated heaviness. Total Abuse have always been huge fans of true guitar gods like Nirvana and Slayer and here it is most apparent. These new Total Abuse tracks are still filthy and as noise drenched as ever, but is an album with a stealth and form unlike the three before it. Excluded is an album about survival, an album about identity, an album (as always) about obsession. Excluded is Total Abuse at their best!

VOW "Kind Eyes"
12"LP - $10.70
THE NATIVE SOUND / NATIVE026v

It’s been a long road to Vow’s debut album. After two EPs released in quick succession, Vow slowed down and took nearly a year and a half to write what would become their debut full-length LP. Without any real direction in mind, but with the mindset of leaving the synths and drum machines behind, Vow set out to reshape their sound. The songs they would begin demoing were their most energetic yet, and more than anything, raw.

Resembling indie rock more than the synth-pop of their former life, Andrew and Julia recruited their close friend, sometimes collaborator, and Touché Amoré guitarist Nick Steinhardt as a permanent addition to the band. ‘Kind Eyes’ is the result of this new evolution of Vow. Their 10 song debut LP will be out May 27th.

ASCEND/DESCEND "Murdock Street"
CASSETTE TAPE - $5.00
WAR FEVER / WFR002cs

Boston hardcore earned its brutal reputation through blood, sweat, and more blood long ago, and continues to evolve and thrive. Now, there's a new kid on the block carrying the torch for aggressive, break-your-teeth hardcore punk—Ascend/Descend, the virulent brainchild of vocalist Michelle Dugan. As guitarist Nicholas Wolf (also of Phantom Glue and Lunglust) told Noisey, "A/D started as a studio project for Michelle Dugan to get some hate out; she had lost her home to a fire. It sort of morphed into a band. Sonically, it's an homage to old school hardcore records. The record focus strongly on how it feels to have things taken from you—your home, sense of security, your identity."

Recorded by American Nightmare alum (and Ascend/Descend drummer) Alex Garcia-Rivera at his all-analog studio, Mystic Valley Studios, Murdock Street roars through seven songs at breakneck speed, emphasizing the "punk" aspect of their sound with crusty gallops, dark moments of tension, and Dugan's pained howl. The band is rounded out by bassist Max Holbrook (of Math the Band), and to complete the DIY circle, Dugan handled all the artwork herself. - Noisey
