President's Report

Greeting Westgater’s,

President’s Report

Your livers are probably glad for the rest after GBW 2016.

Westgate (mainly Grant) was well represented in the competitions that were open to homebrewers.

Grant got into the finals of the Beer Deluxe Homebrew Heroes and took out the Brewers Choice award. This was all followed up by the Cryer Malt SMASH competition which saw the Enigma Pilsner that Grant brewed take out the Best Beer. So as you can see, with the BrewFC win, Westgate has done very well indeed.

It bodes well for next year, so keep your eye out for any competitions we can have a go at.

Our final competition for Brewer Of The Year will be this month. With Ferg 4 points in front, there is only hope for an honourable second place for Robin or myself.

The category is Strong Stout, so open to Australian/Foreign, American or Russian stouts. This is a lead up to the Stout Extavaganza in July.

I still need judges and stewards for the day, so please let one of the committee know if you are available to help or email us here

While I am mentioning the committee, I would like you all to put some thought into what you would like to see the club doing in the next few years.  This is the time when you can have an input and make a difference by joining the committee to steer the club towards a successful future.

It is not an onerous task to sit in on 5 or 6 meetings throughout the year, have a few beers and help organise our events and calendar for the members.

That’s all for now, so I will see you at the next meeting.

Regards,

Michael Bowron

Wort Kits go Macro for the Hospitality Industry

Smartbrew has created a system which is controlled by a PLC that monitors the process and ensures the system is producing consistent product. The system automatically cleans and sterilizes itself. A four tank system is capable of producing over 1000 litres of beer.

Wort kits are brewed the traditional way by Smartbrew, then they are supplied to the bar/restaurant to go into the fermenters, which then they just need to add the yeast, hops... Bingo! Fresh beer.

Check out their website if you want to see more http://www.smartbrew.com/

Brewery creativity helping save oceans

Chris Gove started Saltwater Brewing, Florida in 2013 with four childhood friends. He is passionate about surfing, aquatic and marine life.

They really didn't like the idea of selling their beer in six packs with standard plastic holder for cans, which we know aren't good for the environment, potentially hurt animals and can be eaten by them.

So they decided to do something about it.

They partnered with We Believers to create six pack packaging for beer made from the by products of the beer making process. They created an edible six pack ring which is 100% biodegradable and compostable. A clever solution. Lets hope this system is rolled out worldwide.

Check out the video below, its pretty cool.
