Uncertainty over the effectiveness of costly incentives for prospective teachers |

The cost of bursaries for new teachers will amount to nearly £1bn by next year, but their effectiveness remains unclear, warns the National Audit Office. Mark Parrett, Audit Manager at the Government spending watchdog, told the Education Select Committee that the NAO’s request for a better evaluation of the incentives to attract candidates to the profession had not been met by the DfE.

'Cash shortage for special educational needs' support |

Schools in England are struggling to support the 1.1 million pupils with special needs or disabilities in mainstream classrooms, a report says. A survey of 1,100 school leaders found delays to assessments, insufficient budgets and cuts to local authorities were hampering the ability to cope. The study by The Key, which provides leadership and management support, calls for increased funding.

Believing in Better: How Aspirations and Academic Self Concept Shape Young People's Outcomes, a report by the Sutton Trust in partnership with the University of Oxford. Their research found that there is a growing gender gap in university admissions already apparent in the higher aspirations of girls by the age of 13, whilst by the age of 15 or 16 such aspirations make a big difference to A level choices, particularly for disadvantaged students.
