World Stamp Show New York 2016

May 28 - June 4

Report

World Stamp Show-NY 2016 carried on the rich tradition of the once-a-decade international exhibitions from the past 100 years held in the United States.

More than 200 stamp dealers and postal bureaus attended, hundreds of exhibitors filled thousands of frames displaying some of the world’s greatest stamp rarities, specialty societies and organizations held meetings and seminars every day and hundreds of thousands of people have visited the eight-day event.

The presence of Greek philately was remarkable. The Greek stamps were represented by 7 collections: 2 from Greece, 2 from Germany, 2 from France and 1 from Canada. It is noteworthy that Stavros Andreadis’ “Kassandra Collection” of Greek Large Hermes Heads (1861-1886) and Wolfgang Bauer’s collections of “Large Hermes Heads of Greece 1861-1867 and Combination Frankings” and “Greece - Incoming and outgoing mail and their destinations from 1828 to 1875” were 3 of the 18 collections that participated in the “FIP Championship” Class, something that has never happened before at such a scale! More, the “Kassandra Collection” was nominated as one of the four candidates to get the ‘Grand Prix d’Honneur’.

The other 4 collections were awarded high prizes, as follows:

  • M. Chauvet’s “Hermes, The First Issue of Hellenic stamps on the International Mail 1861-1882”: Large Gold medal & special prize

  • A. Karagiannidis’ “The Small Hermes Heads of Greece 1886-1901”: Large Gold

  • L. Fanchini’s “Fabrication and Postal Usage of the “Large Hermes Head” Paris Printings”: Gold medal

  • Th. Arvanitis’ “The Prephilatelic Period of the Hellenic Postal Service”: Large Vermeil

In addition Greek philately was represented on ONE FRAME No Medal category by Alexandre Galinos with The Postal History of the French “Armee de Moree”. 1828-1833 (Total 93) and George Sotiropoulos with The Serbs in Corfu during WWI (Total 83).

We would like to congratulate all our friends for their participation and awards and wish them an even a brighter future – were it to be possible! We, also, would like to encourage more collectors to participate in future events and enjoy all the benefits their hobby has to offer.
