Thank you to Jennifer "Houli" Houlihan of Austin Music People for illustrating how technology can support and enhance the live music industry from performances and festivals to streaming and licensing, and how tech contributes to Austin’s leadership as the Live Music Capital of the World.
You may find the event slides here.
Houli updated the crowd on the state of the live music industry in Austin stating that Austin's music and music tourism industry generates nearly $2B in ecomonic impact each year; however, many musicians and support professionals are working for tips only or minimum wage and fall below the poverty line. Released in June 2015, The Austin Music Census pointed out several issues that need to be addressed. For example, venues struggle with rapidly rising rents and changing consumer behaviors (ability to stream music for free, unwillingness to pay higher door covers, lack of cash for tip jars). Also, there is a lack of affordable office and collaborative space for the music industry and associated small businesses. How can the community and the technology sector remedy these problems?
In February 2016, Mayor Steve Adler issued the Austin Music and Creative Omnibus Resolution. Houli explained the key areas of focus in the Omnibus including  music industry development, city regulations, operations & incentives, and affordability.
Tech can absolutely help sustain the music industry!
Through the creation of new revenue streams in the face of shrinking record deals, expensive tours, and vanishingly small streaming royalties, technology can encourage good consumer behavior and support musicians and industry personnel.
Houli invited three guest speakers to demonstrate music technologies that are helping to create revenue for the music industry in Austin.
On Vinyl promotes local artists in three ways: press, sonic branding, and social initiatives. Nathalie Phan, CEO, explained how their technology provides a solution for local businesses to legally play licensed local music in stores and restaurants. Companies often go through a middle man company for their music branding because it saves them time, money, and effort. But instead of using mainstream music, On Vinyl Music sources from local musicians. They grow local brands with local artists that fit their profile and make sure those artists are paid for their work.
Roy Truitt, CEO of HubCiti, shared his smart city app that helps citizens navigate their daily life from shopping to transportation options to city services to dining and much more. This technology also connects fans with band with venues. Local music lovers can find any band or venue to enjoy live music. Bands and venues get a free appsite in the app to promote their music and shows, thus growing their revenue stream, selling more recording music and merchandise, and getting more exposure and gaining a larger following of supporters. More exciting revenue generating features are coming soon. Stay tuned!
In an ever increasingly smart phone, attention deficit world, audiences expect an experience and musicians must compete for the attention of fans at live shows. That is where Synesthesia comes in. Theron Pray, CEO of Synesthesia, demonstrated his technology with the help of artist and musician, Michael Garfield. This technology transforms sound into color and art through a hands-free audio reactive software program that displays onto any screen or monitor. It empowers musicians to create a unique experience for their fans and gain a bigger following of supporters.

Lisa Barden invited guests to come out to the ATX Hack for Change event that was held at St. Edwards University on June 3-5, 2016. Hack for Change is Austin’s response to the National Day of Civic Hacking, a White House initiative started in 2013 to inspire citizens to come together and improve their communities. Since 2013, ATX Hack For Change has brought together people from all walks of life to tackle the unique issues facing our weird city. This hackathon focuses on social good projects, from creating mobile apps that streamline volunteer work feeding the homeless to aggregating data for where our sidewalks should be built.
