The EU Referendum: Bad news all round?
James Churchill, former Chief Executive of ARC UK and current CEO of Social Care Training Ltd and Chair of the European Association of Service Provider for Persons with Disabilities Interest Group on Human Resources, recently had his blog published in the New Europe; he shares his views with us here.

"When the UK goes to the polls on June 23rd to vote in the in-or-out referendum for EU membership, I doubt that many voters will be considering the impact of that decision on social care in the UK. Next to such weighty arguments over sovereignty, controlling migration, economic growth, etc what happens in social care might seem trivial.
Yet the inter-connectedness of modern society leads inexorably to the conclusion that it does matter." Read more

Is the funding available for adult social care sufficient?

A major inquiry into the future for adult social care has been launched by the Communities and Local Government Select Committee into the financial sustainability of local authority adult social care and the quality of care provided.

This is an opportunity to have your say on whether the funding available for adult social care is sufficient for local authorities to fulfil their statutory obligations to meet the needs of people requiring care and support following the recent changes such as the National Living Wage and the social care precept.

Please, see here for further details and to submit a written response. The deadline for written submissions is Friday 19 August 2016. Alternatively, ARC England will be collating comments and feedback from our members so please contact Esther Oddy on esther.oddy@arcuk.org.uk if you would like to be involved in ARC England's response.

Every day 6,000 people become carers - many don’t know how or where to get help.

The forum is open to all carers – not just those with loved ones supported by Heart of England Mencap. It is free to attend with carers invited to drop-in on the day. Paid carers are very welcome to attend to seek and share advice as well. For more information about this great new forum see here
ARC member Frontier hosts European Autism Conference
Frontier Support Services worked in partnership with Outside In Pathways to play host to the Sharing European Knowledge on Autism (SEKA) conference in Croydon last month. SEKA comprises organisations from Austria, Northern Ireland, Romania, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Each organisation shares their knowledge and expertise in Autism.

The SEKA project aims to help families to better understand their children and autism. The two-year study will involve interviews with over 100 families in the five member regions. These interviews will be analysed by experts and the results will be presented at an international conference in Turkey in 2017.

The information gathered will be used to create training courses and resources for parents of children with Autism and these will cover issues such as education, health, social rights and entitlements, legal rights, and psychosocial support. SEKA will publish materials and resources in four languages across the European member states and the findings will be used by educators, healthcare professionals, policymakers and families.
