Practice Exchange: Articulating Practice

Practice Exchange: Articulating Practice is a day of presentations and discussion for PhD researchers in CHASE (Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-East England). The day is free of charge to attend.
The day will explore how practice is imagined, seen, understood, theorised and examined in practice-based/practice-as-research PhD projects. You will hear from practising academics, recently graduated PhDs, and PhD researchers who will reflect on research through practice from a range of perspectives and standpoints. How do researchers across artistic disciplines approach theorising their practice? How do researchers defend research pursued through practice in the context of the viva? What experiences, questions and challenges are shared, and what are specific to certain practices? Each session incorporates time for discussion, and ample coffee breaks will allow for time for researchers across CHASE to meet and discuss their work. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Training Needs Survey - reminder
As a CHASE funded student you have the opportunity to participate in focused training and development in emerging fields and cutting edge research skills.
In order to capture and identify individual student and cohort-wide training needs, we ask need you to fill in the short survey using the link below, referring to your RDF Planner to assist, if needed. Completion of this survey is a mandatory requirement of your CHASE scholarship.
The survey should only take a minute to complete but all CHASE-funded students are required to complete it.

Brief Encounters - Call for Submissions
 Intended to showcase the work of CHASE, Brief Encounters will provide individuals with the opportunity to publish in an alternative format to the traditional 7-8,000 word articles often required by academic journals. The journal will be comprised of short but still academically rigorous articles, reviews and creative alternatives.
Brief Encounters welcomes submissions from across the Consortium, both from within institutions as well as from colleagues working at CHASE’s many strategic cultural partners.
Who can submit to Brief Encounters?
- CHASE funded students
- Postgraduate students at CHASE institutions regardless of funding status
- Alumni of CHASE institutions
- Individuals employed by CHASE institutions
- Individuals employed by Non-HEI CHASE partners
Deadline for Issue 1 - Friday 19 August
Brief Encounters is an open access peer-reviewed postgraduate journal, run entirely by postgraduate students from across CHASE.

Places available at Sussex Impact Day
There are two spaces available to attend a day of workshops at Sussex Impact Day. The workshops will be taking place 11:30-16:30 and include:
- Introduction to research impact: what it is and why it matters
- Innovation and research: how to start thinking like an entrepreneur
- Networking skills: building and sustaining relationships for impact
- Writing for a lay audience

Placement Opportunitites - Paul Mellon Centre
The Paul Mellon Centre is pleased to announce a new opportunity for CHASE PhD students. Candidates are invited to apply for a 6 month professional training development placement based at the Centre, working primarily with the Research Collections staff and the Digital Manager.
The focus of the placement will be to facilitate the promotion of material held in the Centre’s Library, Archive and Photographic Archives concerning the Country House. A key output will be the production of an online guide. If feasible within the project timetable, there may also be opportunities to get involved with other Paul Mellon Centre initiatives.
The placement is open to candidates from any disciplinary background, but candidates must be enrolled at a CHASE university. All CHASE funded students have the opportunity to undertake a placement as part of their doctoral training and funding is provided by CHASE. The Paul Mellon Centre does not provide stipends for student placements.

My placement at the British Library

 Between January and March 2016, I undertook an 8-week placement in the Coins and Medals Department at the British Museum as part of my CHASE-funded PhD. In order to maximise my employability, I was advised that obtaining work experience at the British Museum would be beneficial. I, therefore, immediately contacted Gareth Williams, curator of Early Medieval Coinage, and arranged to work with him updating the museum records for Anglo-Viking coins.

CHASE Music Network
Thursday 30 June
Open University Camden
This one-day event will celebrate achievements in music research at institutions belonging to the CHASE. Students researching or interested in this field are encouraged to attend.
The event will allow research students across CHASE to meet their peers in other institutions, to share the results of their recent research on music in an informal environment, and to discuss issues and solutions. Lunch will be provided.

Research collaboration with the British Library
An invitation ahead of the AHRC’s Common Ground event (University of York, 21 June)
The British Library’s Research Development and Digital Scholarship teams are looking forward to meeting colleagues from across the arts and humanities research community at Common Ground, the inaugural AHRC Commons event in York on 21st June.
We’re delighted to have this opportunity to present some of our collections and resources, and to showcase their unique potential for research innovation and engagement. We’ll also be sharing our vision as an AHRC Independent Research Organisation, and discussing opportunities for collaborative projects, partnerships, postgraduate training and research networks.

At the event itself, our display stand in the atrium will be manned throughout the day. Digital Curators Mia Ridge and Stella Wisdom will be introducing examples of projects that use our digital collections and data. This will include demonstrations of Poetic Places – a new app, developed by the Library’s Creative Entrepreneur in Residence, which connects poetry and prose to the locations they depict.
We’ll also be presenting our activities as an IRO in the Collaborate Zone (13.30-14.30 – time TBC pending publication of final programme). Allan Sudlow and James Perkins from our Research Development team will introduce new resources and opportunities for research collaboration, including postgraduate and early-career research. This is also a chance to meet AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership students Katie McElvanney (Queen Mary University of London) and Dvora Liberman (LSE), who will be presenting short videos and summaries of their collaborative research with the Library.

Subversive Histories for Public Cultures

The politics of life history research
The 8th annual Brighton-Sussex postgraduate conference Co-hosted by the Centre for Research in Memory, Narrative and Histories (CRMNH, University of Brighton) and the Centre for Life History and Life Writing Research (CLHLWR, University of Sussex).
The discipline of life history research has long had a political engagement with the tensions between marginalised and dominant voices in the making of public cultures. This year’s postgraduate conference 'Subversive Histories for Public Cultures' re-visits the politics surrounding the practice of life history research. We seek to critically question acts of telling and hearing, and to consider how subversive narratives of the past perform and circulate in public cultures. In this way, the conference will conceptually explore how life history research methods contribute to the interruption and/or maintenance of public cultures, as well as the methods, approaches, and ethical considerations that this entails.
