Looking For Some Inspiration?? Jacqueline Myers-Cho might be just what you're looking for.
 Jacqueline Myers-Cho, a contemporary artist, creates big and bold, yet soft figurative works that are walking the line between the conventional notions of painting and illustration. These stylized females are painted in a classical way, rendering them fresh and new. In recent works, she has also been venturing into a new realm of art which is bursting with a graffiti vibe and bold graphic color.
"I approach the canvas not so much with a completed painting in my mind as with a feeling," she says. "As the work progresses, I keep asking what needs to be done for it to be better. This process of painting better consumes me into something like a walking meditation, constantly stepping back from and forward to the canvas in order to see better," she adds. From this process emerge glowing figures as if they were stepping forward from the background; some of the edges are soft, others hard; the figures carry the attitudes of spunkiness, aloofness, and regalness.
Myers-Cho has been influenced by a number of masters: Henri Matisse for his female figures and his late collage works, Georgia O'Keeffe for her boldness and subtle tones, Rembrandt for his glazed backgrounds and how the figures emerge from them, but she says, "I have also been influenced by two "lowbrow" artists: Mark Ryder for his stylized girls and Joe Sorren for his surreal settings and figures." She has developed a unique style, and her work often contains exaggerated figures with large eyes, a large head, and a long neck.
Jacqueline likes to play with "opposites," such as "soft/hard, tight/loose, real/surreal, and warm/cool." These elements catch the viewers' attention and draw them into the painting. Once there, the viewers' attentions are riveted and their perception is sharpened by her artistic skills and the stories her painting tells.
She has received several awards and has been showing her work since late 1980s. Her artistic pursuit has taken her to many different places, one of which is the island of Maui. While there, she enjoyed the gallery scene being represented both in Lahaina and Kihei. Her works have been collected by fine art enthusiasts from many countries and regions: the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Australia, and Italy.
At the June 9th GAA meeting, Jacqueline will be demonstrating how she creates her graffiti faces, using acrylics, gold leaf and oils. She will also be sharing her ideas about inspiration, creativity and growing as an artist, subjects that all of us will benefit from hearing. It’s going to be an exciting and fun night, so don’t miss it.

Greetings GAA Members and Palette Subscribers,
My name is Vicky Rees, one of GAA’s newest board members and Vice-President. I came to be a member of GAA about four years ago and immediately took up the task of newsletter editor and continue to do so today in addition to my new duties and responsibilities as Vice-President.
 The Spring Salon, “Jewels of Nature” came down on May 28th and was a huge success. Norik’s Gallery space is bright and airy and despite the unusual hanging style, we were able to get all 44 artworks up and ready for the festive opening in fine time. Double congratulations goes to Mina Ferrante, who won Best Of Show with her painting titled, “Lilies In The Twilight”, which also sold at the opening.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the artists who submitted work and who volunteered to sit in the gallery during the show, to everyone who donated food and refreshments for the opening and to the following people who helped... more than just a little: Helena Bowman, Araks Johannes, Shree Hingnikar, Dick Heimbold, Paul Chamberlain, Mina Ferrante and Honor Haase. Once again we prove that, “Working Together, We Make Our Association Great!”
We would also like to thank Norik Dilanchyan for his lovely, spacious gallery and Ian Gothe for providing the great music for the opening reception.

Great Demonstrators For Everyone
Just in time for National Pet Month, our May demonstrator, Richard Eyman, shared his fresh and freestyle pet portrait of an adorable a la prima created dachshund, which was raffled off to lucky winner, Diane Carter. I don’t know about other attendees, but, I was totally inspired to create a portrait of my pooch, Wyatt.
Coming up for the June meeting demonstrator is artist Jacqueline Myers-Cho who will be talking to us about finding inspiration. Jacqueline is a powerhouse mixed media creator and we’re really looking forward to hearing her ideas on creativity and seeing her unique, fresh and always evolving technique.
New Member Benefit
How many times have you heard another artist ask for suggestions on where to get materials? I have heard this countless times, so we thought it might be useful for our members to have access to a preferred provider list for materials. If you have a recommended resource for anything to do with framing, we want to hear about it. Down the road, we will also be adding other things that are frequently used by artists such as general artist supplies and materials. The list will be updated annually and copies will be available at the monthly meetings or by request, a pdf can be emailed. If you know a great frame source, please send us the name, website, address, phone, etc. of the provider and we will include them in our list. I’m hoping that we will have enough interest to include the list in the September issue of the Palette, just in time for the fall salon. Send your recommendations to: glendaleartassociation@gmail.com
The Next Board Meeting...
will take place prior to the monthly member's meeting on Thursday night, June 9th at 6:00 sharp in the Citibank Community Room where our monthly meetings take place. All members are welcome.
Volunteers Needed
Yes, it's me again... urging you to volunteer. Now, come on. You know you want to be part of something bigger than yourself... something rewarding... something good... something fun. :) Read on for a few of the areas where we need you.
Over the summer months we will be looking into venues for the fall exhibition and for an Exhibition Chairperson/Lead. Currently, a selection committee is forming to find a venue and hammer out the details of the next open exhibition. It’s a pretty big deal and I know that many of our members have strong feelings about these salon locations. If you would like to have an impact on these decisions, now is the time to take part and get involved.
Araks Johannes has been handling the membership duties for a long time and will need to step down soon. We are seeking someone to fill her position as Membership Chair. The position requires a one year commitment of 3-5 hours per month. Knowledge of Excel or Numbers software programs is necessary and monthly board meeting attendance is helpful.
We are also in need of a Secretary/Scholarship Administrator. The Secretary is expected to attend all monthly board meetings and regular member meetings to record the minutes as well as manage the scholarships which we award to GUSD high school students. This position requires a one year commitment of 10-12 hours per month.
Many of our members enjoy “Paint Outs”, however, we currently do not have a coordinator for these events, so they have not been taking place. If you enjoy Paint Outs and would like to see these reinstated, get involved and take the lead as Paint Out Coordinator.
Heads Up... A Survey Coming Your Way!
In an effort to help us grow and meet the needs of our association, we are going to be emailing a survey in the next few days to current and previous members (active within 1-2 years). The survey consists of 10 multiple choice questions and will only take a few moments of your time. We are asking for feedback in several areas including exhibitions and monthly meetings. We will share the results in September after we come back from our two-month summer break.
Carve Out Time For Art
With the July/August break upon us, I would like to remind everyone to find time to make art every day. I’m especially saying this for my own benefit, if I’m being honest. There will always be dirty laundry, errands, household to-do lists etc. but, if you don’t get in the studio or take your plein aire stuff out to draw and paint, you are doing yourself a disservice. At least, that’s what I believe. So, go ahead, give yourself permission and set aside a few fun and rewarding hours (or a few moments) each day to make some art. We are looking forward to seeing all your fresh, new creations in the 2016 Fall Salon.

Jennifer Bentson received a grant from the City of Pasadena to create paintings of their significant oaks. For the last four years Jennifer has been painting oak trees all over California for her "California Oaks as Art" project. Pasadena enjoyed the information she shared about the project and decided it would be a good project for their city. Her paintings will be on display for the month of May at the Main Library in their display cases. The library is located at 285 E. Walnut, Pasadena, CA 91101. Parking is free. Hours: Mon-Sat, 10am-6pm and Fridays, 2pm-6pm.
Jennifer's Oak Paintings will also be recognized at an "Oak Tree Tea" to be held at Caltech's Dabney Hall, June 11 from 3 - 6pm. Admission is free. The event will feature poetry and other entertainment. The Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute will sponsor the refreshments.

Paul Chamberlain is also exhibiting at La Galeria Gitana in “The American West: It’s Peoples, History & Landscapes” show going on now through July 8th. La Galeria Gitana is located at 120 N. Maclay Ave., San Fernando, CA.
