Cyclone Roanu caused severe floods and landslides across Sri Lanka over the month of May and the Foundation of Goodness has put in place a three step post-resettlement flood relief plan to help 100+ families get back on their feet. The first step of this plan was completed on the 29th of May, handing over dry rations sufficient for a period of 1-2 months to help the families’ immediate concerns with step 2 and 3 of the project to follow soon, providing housewares, scholarships and school packs, loss & trauma counseling and livelihoods support. With the kind sponsorship of LBW Trust and Batting for Change, we were able to distribute 80 scholarships to ladies pursuing tertiary education in the South, with 20 more to be distributed in the North and East in the month of June. To date, LBW Trust has worked with the Foundation of Goodness to present 175 scholarships to students from across Sri Lanka in addition to the recent sponsorships.
 

The Foundation of Goodness was honoured to welcome Netball Australia to our Sports Academy for a special tour and coaching session. Netball Australia donated valuable training videos to the Sports Academy following their training session and we hope to establish a partnership between the two organizations which will help showcase the immense talent of rural sportswomen.

Katherine Brown, Executive Director of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy along with Joshua Shen and Dushinka Abeyasekara from the US Embassy- Colombo joined us the MCC Centre of Excellence for a special visit while their iBus team lead by Prasad Perera conducted social media training for the Seenigama youth.

Dr. Asoka Mendis who has been a strong supporter of the Foundation for many years will publish his memoir ‘Events On My World Line: Recollections and Reflections of an Asian- American Space Scientist’ and has pledged to donate the royalties towards uplifting rural communities via FoG community development endeavors.

Ursula Delfosse who has been a longtime supporter of FoG sponsored the purchase of a washing machine for the Balapitiya Elders’ Home to ease their burden.
 
Retailer Kantala who ran a special promotion through out the month of March for International Women’s Day have donated the proceeds of their campaign towards sponsoring a student from FoG's Women’s Enterprise & Empowerment Centre for a period of one year to encourage rural women to discover their true potential, learn new skills and gain independence.
 
A team from FoG made a special visit to the remote village of Udagaladebokka situated 25 km away from Hasalaka, Mahiyangana to carry out a special needs assessment with regard to installing solar panels which would provide much needed electricity to this isolated village lost in the wilderness.
 
Volunteer Lasitha Lakmal completed the special JAVA course he has been conducting for 35 FoG IT students since September 2015, sharing invaluable knowledge that will help the students excel in their chosen careers.
 
The month of May included many activities carried out by the Foundation of Goodness to commemorate Vesak, the most important day of the Buddhist calendar which marks the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Sri Siddhartha Gautama Buddha. The day was honoured by an Alms-Giving programme for the monks of the Galduwa forest hermitage, while special projects carried out through out the month included the unveiling of a Buddha statue and shrine room in Moneragala sponsored by Srimani Gunatilleke, special meditation and religious programmes organised by the Children’s Goodness Clubs who also took the time to assist the residents of an Elders’ Home to visit the temple, and a colourful Vesak lantern contest.
 
Other special activities for the month included the annual Kite Competition organised by the Children’s Goodness Club for a fun day at the beach while 45 students from the Women’s Enterprise Cookery and Bakery courses visited the Grand Udawalawe Hotel for practical experience as part of their course.
 
The FoG Community Psycho-social Unit participated in their regular training session with Sr. Canice who conducted a seminar on stress management & supervision as well as conducting special programmes for the Children’s Goodness Clubs on topics such as understanding your mind and how to help friends.
 
Special training for the Sports Academy this month included a Karate coaching camp held by Mr. Lalith Nanayakkara for 50 karate players, a martial arts and self defense programme conducted for 23 children and youth by the Sri Lanka School of Jeet Kune Do, Hemantha Devapriya’s monthly coaching camp sponsored by Tokyo Cement for 23 cricketers, and fitness training conducted by Victor Celestine from Nigeria on four days of the week for all FoG sports squads.

Ongoing monthly projects include Recycling4Smiles bi-weekly oral hygiene programmes made possible over the last 2 ½ years by Sonali Ranaweera- the remarkable teenager from USA, which is a great achievement and an example for us all, the sponsorship towards the Navodaya Centre for Special Children by FoG Trustee Muthiah Muralidaran and monthly grocery packs donated by Sapan Nainani & family and Gemma Nolan towards families in need and Elders' Homes, respectively. Such projects provide ongoing care to ensure the continued well-being of a wide cross section of beneficiaries.

Beneficiary community aid projects this month included monthly visits to the Madampagama and Wellawatta Elders’ Homes by the FoG Medical Centre staff for special medical checkups and weekly beach cleaning programmes organised by the Diving & Training Centre students.
 
Many donors worldwide including Colombo Operated Model United Nations (COMUN) and 'Help A Child, Donate A Book'- Singapore have gifted various items to benefit rural kids and youth including books, stationery, sports equipment and a variety of other items to improve the skills and talents of rural beneficiaries.

The Foundation of Goodness is delighted to have 4 volunteers with us this month from Sri Lanka and UK, all of whom are adding value to our work.

76 Village Welfare projects amounting to Rs. 1,115,658.45  (USD 7,650/-) divided among areas such as healthcare, scholarships, education, electricity, elders' care and general welfare were facilitated this month to uplift the living standards of rural villagers to ease their burden in addition to the ongoing campus style of operation in place.

The Goodness Rhythm Dance Troupe will visit UK for a special performance during the Sri Lanka vs England 3rd Test Match to take place at the MCC Lords Grounds on the 10th of June as well as a performance at Westminster City Hall upon the Lord Mayor's invitation.

Success Story
 
Chandrika Damayanthi joined the Dress Making course offered at the Foundation of Goodness'  Women's Enterprise & Empowerment Centre straight after completing her G.C.E. O/Levels. A hardworking and diligent student, Chandrika was later able to use this knowledge to start her own dress-making business through which she now earns her living. Chandrika is delighted that she was able to turn the knowledge offered free of charge into a profit making business that is a great strength to her, offering financial security and stability.
