Sudden Hearing Loss

Sudden hearing loss is defined as a subjective sensation of hearing impairment that occurs rapidly over a 72 hour period in one or both ears. It may be accompanied by dizziness or tinnitus. Sudden hearing loss is considered a medical emergency and patients are encouraged to contact their physician’s office immediately to rule out any obvious contributing factors (e.g. ear wax, ear infection), and to make further recommendations for testing and possible treatment. Complete hearing evaluations can aid the physician in creating a treatment plan by determining the type and degree of impairment. We are aware that treatment options can be time sensitive so advise the audiologist’s office that it is an evaluation for sudden hearing loss when making the referral.
