Welcome to Mendes' Rainforest

HI, I’m Sean Hawser and I’m leader of the Mendes’ Rainforest Subcamp.

I have been involved in scouting for 36 years as a Scout Leader, GSL and more recently as ADC Scouts for Brentwood, Essex. I have attended many Essex Jamborees, my first in 1988 as part of the Abseiling Team, and was involved in the last two Essex jamborees as a participant Contingent Leader.

Whilst I will confess that this is my first Jamboree as a Subcamp Leader, I have assembled a great team balancing considerable national and international jamboree experience with “first timers” oozing enthusiasm.

I am confident that together we will help make your stay on Mendes’ Rainforest Subcamp enjoyable and your time at EIJ2016 one that you’ll never forget.

We look forward to meeting you in July.

Introducing our Mascot

Every subcamp needs a mascot and ours is no exception!

After much debate we decided that, as Mendes’ Rainforest is named after the Brazilian environmentalist and campaigner Chico Mendes, we should have a mascot which he would recognise in an instance.

We decided upon an animal which is one of Brazil’s national animals. Like a Jamboree it is colourful, flamboyant, can be noisy and never goes unnoticed! If you were to visit one of the areas in the Amazon saved by Chico Mendes you would undoubtedly see it in the trees. It is………… a scarlet macaw.
Whilst we have done the easy bit of choosing our mascot, we are leaving the hard work of naming it to you. You can cast your votes via the following link and will let you know the outcome in the next newsletter!

We hope you will agree that it’s not a bad choice and we hope that this colourful character will help inspire you to turn your part of our Subcamp into a little bit of Brazil!

We’ll be in touch with you again soon too to explain how we can all make our Subcamp gateway something to behold and remember!

Inside The Subcamp Office

Chico Mendes, after whom our Subcamp is named, was a Brazilian environmentalist and campaigner who strove to protect the Amazon rainforest and the lives of the people living in it. Through his dedication, hard work and personal sacrifices, almost 1 million hectares are now protected to ensure that traditional ways of lives can continue and the rainforest the people live in is safe for future generations.

To salute this great achievement in our own small way, we aim to make our Subcamp Office, helpdesk and general area a rainforest haven in a busy jamboree world. We want it to be somewhere leaders and young people alike will want to spend time, for it to be a welcoming space away from the hustle and bustle, a bit of a sanctuary.

Picture looking up through the rainforest canopy at a clear blue sky, surrounded by dense rainforest, the chirp of insects, birds singing, the occasional cry of a rainforest creature, the trickle of a river, somewhere safe and comfortable to rest your feet and recover after a trek through the rainforest….that is what we are want to create and we hope you’ll let us know if we get close to achieving it!
