Upcoming Save Ontario Shores Dates – Please mark your calendars for these three important events!

  1. Save Ontario Shores Sunday June 5 – fundraiser event: An Evening with Friends at the White Birch. 5 p.m. Basket Raffle - 6 p.m. Music

  2. Wednesday June 8 at 6:30 in the  Somerset Town Hall, Public Hearing Towns that have Opted Out Currently in New York State this section of the law gives Solar, Wind and Biomass projects an exemption from Real Property Tax. With the Lighthouse Wind Project this is a substantial issue. Towns do have the ability to opt out of this law. Given the looming 70 turbine industrial wind project, Somerset, like many other towns across the state, has decided that it is in the best interests of all the residents that it take this step to opt out of the tax exemption. The money that will be drawn out of the state from this project together with the huge negative impacts to the local economy, real estate, the environment, wildlife and the health of citizens mandates that the Town of Somerset take this step. The prior wind law that was not implemented with this type of huge project in mind, along with the NY tax exemption, has created an invitation for a wind corporation like Apex to take advantage of this area. The Wind Law was modified to better protect residents. It is time for us to remove the one tax break that the town has control over and let wind companies know that a project of this size is not compatible with this community. The Town of Yates opted out of this law in 2008. Here is a listing of the other towns that have opted out.
on the Local Law to Opt out of New York State Real Property Tax Law Section 487. of the NY Tax Exemption. This list does not include a number of additional towns that opted out in 2016 already.

  3. Thursday June 9 at 7 pm – Yates Town Board Meeting Amend the Wind Energy Facilities Law of 2008. The Town Board may be voting on a Local Law to in order to help protect residents from the negative environmental, economic and health impacts of 600 foot turbines placed too close to residences and environmentally significant or sensitive areas.
