Wild 14U Rep’s Zoe Slabodnik Written Up in Skagit Valley Herald

Atop the brightly colored sports equipment bag sitting on the porch of the Slabodnik family home rests a pair of hockey sticks.

Yes, hockey sticks.

While Sedro-Woolley doesn’t have an ice rink, it does have a hockey player in Zoe Slabodnik.

Correction: 10U Wild to Play Squirt Level

Please note this correction to the previous edition of WWFHA Assists which erroneously stated the Washington Wild 10U team would play Mite level in the MHL (cross-ice): the 10U Washington Wild, headed by Jason Goscinski, will not play cross-ice, but play a full season of games in the Squirt/10U MHL division per their rules.

Beyond the Wild: Amanda Dewell

Amanda “Grey” Dewell” loves ice hockey. She also loves singing. From the age of 8 years old, she enjoyed taking the stage at her elementary school’s talent shows. In a bonus, she happened to win both years she participated.

After elementary school, she joined a summer rock camp in Tacoma called “Live it Out Loud”. The first year she performed in a band with 5 other members and they won the camp’s final competition. The following year she attended the camp again, this time writing several of her own songs. A gentleman who helps with the program sees enough potential in Amanda’s talent that he is helping her create an album.

Amanda doesn’t want to be super famous – but she would like to earn enough money to buy an ice rink so she can play hockey whenever she wants!

Click here to see and hear most recent song
or just search for Amanda Grey Dewell on YouTube. She has an album on iTunes and Spotify under Amanda Dewell titled "Notes from the Out Crowd".

Beyond the Wild features players' talents beyond the ice hockey rink. We are seeking other players to feature and request our modest members to share their talents on a regular basis. Please submit your daughter's extracurricular activities, talents, volunteerism, passions and hobbies to the info@wwfha.com!

Recruiting Advice: Dear Prospective Student-Athlete,

I received your introductory two-line email and read through it. I must say your first sentence was painfully familiar as you introduced yourself by first name only. I assumed if you were trying to make an impression that you would have paid more attention to punctuation, but my assumption appears incorrect. While your opening email failed to identify your last name, what year in school you are, where you are from, or what position you play, you managed to include your most pressing question as to whether our team is "giving out scholarships".

Lyndsey Fry Hockey Camp

Returning to Seattle April 29th, 30th and May 1st, Lyndsey Fry once again enthralled large groups of 12U and 19U female Wild hockey players with her unparalleled enthusiasm and zest for all things hockey. Joining her on the ice were some of the head coaches of the Washington Wild teams.

Her successful camp focused on individual skill development to promote lasting knowledge. We look forward to welcoming Lyndsey back to Seattle again in the future!

The Experts’ Edge

5 Things That Are Guaranteed to Make You a Better Hockey Player (Hint: They Have Nothing to Do with Talent)

Talent is extremely important in hockey, but there are a few ‘non-talent’ related things you can do to amplify the rate at which you develop as a hockey player. These things have nothing to do with how good you are, and EVERYTHING to do with your character.

Punctuality
A simple thing that is entirely in your control is punctuality. Being on time is a choice, and it can have a profound impact on your performance.

Work Ethic
Hard work builds character. Plain and simple.

Body Language
Check out my article on body language in hockey here
http://builtforhockey.com/importance-of-body-language-in-hockey/ if you want to learn more about how changing just a few things in your game can really help your performance in the long-run—no talent necessary.

Energy and Enthusiasm
Energy & enthusiasm is so important when it comes to developing as a hockey player. When you play competitively, you can find yourself skating anywhere from 5 to 7+ times per week. Enthusiasm is your friend. Even if it feels like you’re faking it sometimes—your mind can’t tell the difference.

Attitude
How do you deal with adversity? Your attitude drives your behavior.

Conclusion
With all 5 of these things, the choice is entirely yours to make.

The above is a much abbreviated version of a great article written by Ben Levesque. Read his original, inspirational post here:
http://builtforhockey.com/5-things-no-talent/.

About the Author: Ben Levesque has played hockey for 20+ years and learned a ton from playing with the world's best coaches & players. Among his accomplishments are a National Championship, a President's Cup, a Semi-Final finish at the Memorial Cup, several Queen's Cups and a helmet in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
